The VAFA announces that Phil Stevens has tendered his resignation from the Board effective from Monday 29th May.
Phil said, “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the Board over the past 2 years and assisting with the challenges presented. However, I’ve decided the time is right to step down and give the Board and Management an opportunity to further meet the increasing demands of Amateur Football.”
Phil has had a long and distinguished career at the VAFA.
Following a 169 game football career at the highest level (then known as the ‘VFL’) with Geelong (125) and St.Kilda (44), Phil turned to coaching roles with Sandringham (VFA) and then Old Haileybury (VAFA).
Phil served as the VAFA Chief Executive Officer for 16 years from 1989 through to 2004.
Phil was awarded life membership of the VAFA in 2008.
Speaking on behalf of the Board, Vice President Frank Dunell acknowledged the immense contribution that Phil has made to the VAFA competition as both an administrator and Director.
“Phil has made an enormous contribution to the VAFA over a significant period. In his most recent years, through his significant experience and connection with Clubs, he has provided sound counsel for the Board and VAFA management and he leaves big shoes to fill.“
Since re-joining the Board in 2022, Phil has been instrumental in delivering the Constitutional changes, establishing the Life Members Association, facilitating the recognition and awards project, and liaising with Clubs and Councils on VAFA venue issues.
A popular statesman of the game, everyone in the VAFA wishes Phil and his wife Robyn all the best for the future and look forward to continuing to see him at VAFA matches in the future.
