The 2025 VAFA Division 2 Men’s fixture has been released, and it’s shaping to be another hotly-contested section again this year.
With Elsternwick and Brunswick rising to Division 1, Canterbury and St John’s have stepped up to take their place.
The Cobras, under new coach Steve Brown, are up to Div 2 for the first time since joining the VAFA in 2014 and will kick off this exciting new chapter with an opening round visit to St Mary’s Salesian on Saturday, April 5.
St John’s, who won the Division 2 flag in 2011, will begin their quest for another title with a huge Round 1 challenge. They will host one of the two teams coming down from Division 1 – West Brunswick – who sat two sections above them entering the final round last season.
The Magpies have won two Division 2 titles in their history – 1960 and 1980 – and will be keen to bounce straight back up to Division 1.
Old Yarra Cobras is the other team to drop down from Div 1 in 2025. They will open their Division 2 campaign by hosting 2024 Preliminary finalist South Melbourne Districts in a good early test of where they sit in this new Division.
The Swans will renew their rivalry with the team they eliminated from last year’s Div 2 finals – Whitefriars – at Whitefriars College in Round 4. It’s a game we’re sure the Friars have already circled on their calendar.
While we’ll have to wait until Round 8 for the much-anticipated Div 3 Grand Final rematch between Canterbury and St John’s.
There will be three single-week bye rounds throughout the season – between Rounds 2-3 (Easter), 8-9 (King’s Birthday) and 12-13 (Big V rep weekend).
The final round of the home & away season will take place on Saturday August 23, followed by a three-week Finals campaign culminating with Grand Final Day on the weekend of September 13-14.
