Old Brighton have been dealt their first loss of the season at the hands of Marcellin who are proving themselves hot contenders come finals. Whilst both are premiership favourites, Marcellin had the edge over Old Brighton on Saturday in a game where the winner was no doubt going to take some confidence into finals where these two sides could meet again.
Marcellin’s victory now leaves them with a chance to square up first position next week if they go on to beat Old Haileybury by a significant margin and Old Brighton lose to the in-form Old Melburnians.
Whilst they haven’t quite had the season they had last year, with ups and downs in their form, Marcellin looks to be peaking at just the right time to run home strong and take this form into finals.
A strong first half set the game up with Marcellin kicking 5.2 to Old Brighton’s 2.2; noting they were able to keep the ladder leaders goalless in the first quarter. Old Brighton looked threatening at three quarter-time when they were 17 points down even an 18-point second half was not enough to claw their way back into the game. Marcellin held strong right the way through in an impressive four-quarter performance.
Plenty of talented players vying for spots in the Team of the Year lined up against each other on Saturday; no surprises that Zoe Glascott had an impressive game once again, with another three goals to add to her goal tally. Talia Oates was also impressive with two goals. The ever-reliable Old Brighton forward in Lily Tait kicked two goals for the day. Looking forward to seeing how these two line up in finals.
Old Melburnians continued their strong stint of form on the weekend, knocking off Parkdale Vultures by 35 points. Whilst they only have five wins for the season, Old Melburnians have now impressively won three of their last four games.
Despite a recent run of losses, Parkdale still looks set to progress to finals, with a strong percentage lead over the fourth placed Collegians. However, they’ll be hoping for some fiercer form in order to match Old Brighton and Marcellin.
Old Melburnians consistently piled on goals for the game, scoring 8.4, five of these in the first half. Parkdale meanwhile kicking 2.5 for the game, with only one goal on either side of half time. Prue Harvey and Ella Bennetts were best on for the day, kicking three and two goals each respectively.
For Parkdale, Tayla Ingram and Sienna Symons kicked their goals.
Old Melburnians face a tough match up against Old Brighton next week as they look to finish their season on a high. This head-to-head will put the Omlettes through their paces as they prepare for what could await should they make finals. Parkdale will play the inconsistent Collegians in an all-important third v fourth clash with finals standings up for grabs.
The potential wooden spooners in Old Haileybury recorded their fourth win of the season, albeit a very impressive win over Collegians. It has been a real form drop off for Collegians, who started the competition strongly when they moved a division.
The win showed a massive sign of improvement for the Hearts who managed to turn last week’s 76-point loss into a 65-point thumping over the Lions. The margin threatened to be much larger, given Haileybury kicked 21 behinds, but their strong defensive effort held Collegians to just 2 behinds for the match.
Serene Vudiniabola was a clear best on ground with four goals.
Old Haileybury will finish off the season playing the red-hot Marcellin, whilst Collegians will be looking to bounce back against Parkdale Vultures at home.
