Old Melburnians stole a crucial four points in the context of their season, while big wins at the top of the ladder saw the top sides extend their gap to the mid-table.
There is now just four weeks left of the home and away season, and while the top four teams appear to have broken away, fighting for that home final in the first week could be pivotal.
Opening the round on Saturday was Old Haileybury hosting Old Melburnians, as the Omlettes claimed a three-point win away from home.
The OM’s needed to bag the four points against the Bloods, who going into the contest, sat just one win above them on the ladder. A loss would have meant OM’s were all but certain to finish last.
In the opening term it was the Bloods who struck first, off the boot of Bridget Hanrahan. Her goal was immediately matched by OM’s Prue Harvey to level the scores into the first break at a goal apiece.
The second quarter was dominated by the visitors. They couldn’t quite capitalise on such momentum, but still managed to open up a handy nine-point buffer into half-time.
Old Haileybury, sensing the importance and significance of the game at hand came back firing.
Harvey put the Omlettes up by 15 points early in the third, before a run of three unanswered Bloods’ goals gave them the lead at the final change.
Lucy Thea extended the Old Haileybury lead out to 10 points, before Harvey slotted her third to bring it back to a one kick ballgame.
All seemed to be going the way of the Bloods before a goal to Old Melburnians from Clare Fraser near on the final siren, stole the game and with it a vital four-points.
All five OM’s goals from Harvey and Fraser gave mentions among the best for Old Melburnians alongside Milly Treacy.
While for Old Haileybury, Ella Gown was named in the best for a remarkable tenth time out of a possible 12 games this season.
Marcellin recorded a monstrous triple-figure win over Collegians at Marcellin College.
The Eagles came into this matchup expecting to win, and from the outset they were firing on all cylinders.
It was a combination of utter midfield dominance and the presence of Zoe Glascott up forward with three first quarter goals that lifted Marcellin to a 50-0 lead at quarter time.
The surge was simply astonishing from the second-placed Eagles who just continued to pile on goal after goal. The half time scoreline, 12.7 (79) to 0.1 (1).
Glascott slotted her sixth in the third term, before finally a goal was kicked for the depleted Collegians outfit courtesy of Isabella Allan.
The fourth term certainly made this game and the moment the headline of the round, as Glascott went on a tear.
She slotted four final quarter goals and with her last of the day kick her tenth of the morning and in doing so saluted a 102-point win for the Eagles.
She takes her tally up to 43 for the year and leads the sections goal kicking tally by 15.
Glascott’s 10 goal haul was one of the easier names to include among the best for Marcellin. Joining her was Sara McMillan and Olivia Frost.
As for Collegians, Sunday Stoney, Laura Luci and Emma Fitzpatrick showed promise on a tough day.
Old Brighton remained undefeated, posting a commanding 67-point win against the Parkdale Vultures to close out the round.
In what was typical Brighton Beach Oval conditions, wind played a major factor in the contest. But it was no harm for the Tonners, who piled on four goals to nil in a dominant opening term.
The barrage continued off the break, as Sienna Courtney and Morgan McGregor, made it six individual goal scores for the hosts. They took a positive 6.5 (41) to 0.0 (0) lead into half time.
Old Brighton continued with a spring in their step extended the lead to 56 with goals to Mietta Nolan and Chloe George.
Parkdale finally found the big sticks late in the term before a snappy response from Lily Tait set the margin back to near 10 goals on the stroke of three-quarter time.
A couple goals for Old Brighton in the last, saw the undefeated Tonners prove once again why they are the team to beat in 2024.
Tait with two goals takes her goal tally this season to 28 with two goals. She was named among the best alongside skipper Caterina O’Brien and Katie Grant.
Breanna Allen, Lucy Burgess and Jasmine Reeve were impressive for Parkdale and were named in their best players.
Next week ladder leaders Old Brighton head to Ian Johnson Oval to visit Collegians. Old Melburnians will host Marcellin, and Parkdale Vultures will look to get back on the winners list against Old Haileybury.
