2025 Division 3 Men’s Fixture
The 2025 VAFA Division 3 Men’s fixture has dropped, and there are plenty of great games to look forward to in what looks to be a highly competitive section. Canterbury
With just one month remaining in the home and away season, there is a tight tussle to secure a position in finals. With just 2 points the difference between third and fifth, one poor performance could prove costly at the pointy end.
Glen Eira/Old McKinnon have once again proved themselves as flag frontrunners in 2024, outplaying the competition in a 20-point victory over Oakleigh. The Krushers were quick to get their hands on the footy with their lone score for the day coming in the first 3 minutes of play with a behind.
Glen Eira did what they do best from then on and controlled momentum, shifting the state of play to their advantage as they hit the scoreboard, with a 15-point advantage at the half.
A sign of a good team is a fighting spirit, and Oakleigh showed some ticker in the match applying defensive pressure, which ultimately prevented a blowout result on the scoreboard. Glen Eira’s accuracy will be a focal point for the remaining rounds; an area that could make or break a game in a close contest, kicking 2.9 (21) on the weekend.
Eliza Morrison is a hidden gem that the Glen Eira Gryphons have uncovered kicking a goal and earning herself a spot in the best in her past and only 2 matches of the season. The skipper was in her usual fine form, leading her side to yet another victory.
Despite sitting comfortably on top, the Gryphons are showing no signs of slowing down as finals etch closer; instilling a sense of fear in the competition with what they may deliver on the big stage. The loss sees Oakleigh slip from third to fifth, needing to boost their percentage to break back into the top four.
A win on the weekend sees Power House leapfrog into third, coming away with a 32-point win over Richmond Central. Catherine Bartholomew has impressed since making her debut just three weeks ago, kicking 2 of Power House’s 5 goals.
Power House got off to a fast start with their early lead of 25 points too significant for the Snakes to chase down. After slotting 4.1 in the first, fatigue started to set in with Power House registering just a further 1.6 in the final three quarters of play.
Julie Dortmans, Rionach Nealon, and Louise Allen all contributed noteworthy performances for the Snakes, and will be eager to get back on the park next weekend and back on the winners list when they come up against Mazenod.
Over at the winner’s camp, Grace Read who has hardly put a foot wrong all season finds herself named best afield yet again, making a strong case for the competition’s Best and Fairest.
In the match of the round, Mazenod staged a late comeback to overrun Hawthorn in an impressive display of endurance and determination. On a sunny morning at Central Reserve, the football was in motion for much of the game with just 3 goals scored for the duration.
The Hawks gave themselves a comfortable buffer heading into the first change with a 1.6 (12) start outshining the Nodders’ score of 0.1 (1). After a goal going the way of Mazenod late in the second term to drag the margin back to 3 points, scoring shots dried up at either end right through to the fourth quarter.
Hawthorn sacrificed early dominance and a healthy lead, unable to hit the scoreboard after quarter time. Mazenod took the momentum and ran with a final goal from Evangeline Clough Good sealing their fate and securing them the all-important 4 points.
Whitefriars streak continues as they record their fifth win on the trot, with Old Camberwell/AJAX their latest victim. In a one-sided affair for much of the contest, a cohesive Whitefriars outfit took their chances early to control much of the footy with a 3.3 first half, keeping their opponents at bay.
Home ground proved no such advantage for Old Camberwell/AJAX who were playing catch right from the outset. Gypsy Folwell scored their lone goal which came in the final term, which gives credit to the side for not giving up when the chips are down.
Caitlin Ryan spearheaded the rampage from the Friars with 3 majors, while Mia Smith contributed 2 of her own. Whitefriars charged home to a 33-point victory, with the final scoreboard reflecting 1.2 (8) to 6.5 (41).
The clash of the green and golds was not to be as Old Trinity had to forfeit their matchup against Hampton Rovers due to insufficient numbers to get on the park. The handy four points cements the Rovers in second spot for now with a tough run home looming.
Every weekend from now on offers teams a chance to fine-tune their skill and end the season on a high note. Hawthorn kicks off the Round 13 campaign back at home and will push the Hampton Rovers right to their limits as they look to get back on the winners list. Power House host Old Camberwell/AJAX, while Mazenod will be looking to carry their momentum as they travel to face Richmond Central.
The match of the round between Whitefriars and Oakleigh is sure to be a spectacle with percentage separating the two currently sitting in fourth and fifth. Will the stars align for the Friars to make it six in a row, or will the Krushers bounce back into the top four?
Rounding out the weekend of community football, Old Trinity will come up against a dominant Glen Eira/Old McKinnon at Daley Oval in the primetime slot.
