Round 6 delivered many thrills across Premier C, with four sides managing to score one hundred plus points where forward pressure and fast game-play was rewarded.
The Parkdale Vultures recorded an emphatic 109 point victory against the Monash Blues on a day where the Vultures dominated from start to finish. Parkdale were on top right from the get go with a healthy 29-point lead at quarter-time. Unfortunately for Monash, they could not stop this blazing forward line who booted a further thirteen goals whilst the Blues only managed two more majors. P
arkdale’s Mitch Brown played his role perfectly, kicking an incredible fourteen goals, in what was an amazing day out for him. Captain Charles Cosgriff stood up for the Monash Blues who have just recorded the one victory after six rounds. This win sees the Vultures reiterate their strength in Premier C, finishing the round in first place with a comfortable percentage.
A clash between two top-four heavyweights saw AJAX triumph by 46 points over the Hampton Rovers. In their first match back on home soil at Gary Smorgon Oval, AJAX were in a tight battle with the Rovers throughout the first half but broke away and dominated after half-time.
Both teams were looking to redeem themselves after their respective losses last week, and whilst AJAX achieved that by claiming the four points in this game, the Rovers could walk away with their heads held high, satisfied with the pressure they brought to the contest, particularly in the first half.
Maor Chrapot and Toby Sheezel each kicked three goals for AJAX, whilst Jamie Delaney, Lachlan Cairns and Max Van der Straaten were amongst the best on ground for Hampton.
Mazenod defeated Glen Eira/Old McKinnon by 42 points at Central Reserve. This was a crucial clash for both sides with Mazenod aiming for a win to remain on the tail of the top four as the Gryphons too looked to continue to climb the ladder.
Glen Eira/Old McKinnon got off to a good start with Lachlan Mirams getting the Gryphons on the board with the first goal of the afternoon, however soon after Mazenod retaliated with three goals.
This back and forth scoring continued and by half-time, the Gryphons trailed by 13-points, well and truly in arms reach of Mazenod. But in the premiership quarter, Mazenod shone with five majors, and a further two in the last quarter saw them win this game comfortably. Despite the loss, Sean Bass impressed for the Gryphons with four goals.
Oakleigh had a day to forget, suffering a 95-point thrashing at the hands of PEGS. PEGS did not give Oakleigh much of a look in, kicking the first four goals of the match which initially provided them with a 28-point lead at quarter time. PEGS’ lead ballooned as the game continued, most dominant in the third quarter, amassing 50-points on the scoreboard compared to Oakleigh’s two behinds.
Jack Fenner and Daniel Flaherty starred for the away side, both kicking five goals and continuing their good form in 2024. Luke Ashen did well, scoring five of Oakleigh’s nine goals. This loss sees Oakleigh remaining in last spot on the ladder, desperately searching for their first win in Premier C, whilst PEGS sit in sixth place with a healthy percentage.
Sunday’s match-up saw Old Carey defeat Marcellin by 83 points at Marcellin College. Marcellin just struggled to get going as Old Carey made a statement to the rest of Premier C as to why they deserve their place in the top four.
Old Carey got off to a good start and only improved as the game went on, breaking away in the second half which included seven majors in the final term. Skipper Lachlan Rush, Aidan Prato and Jack Pekin were among the best on ground for the home side, whilst Tom Jepson and Riley Thompson both had a fantastic outing for the victorious Old Carey, kicking five goals each to make their victory that much better. This game sees Marcellin finish the round sitting eighth, as Old Carey find themselves second, just behind the Vultures on percentage.
Round 7 is another round to keep a close eye on with many exciting match-ups awaiting. As we near the half-way mark of the season, the challenge is on all ten teams to continue putting in the effort and avoid a mid-season form slump.
AJAX host the Monash Blues, with AJAX certainly looking to break back into the top-two. Old Carey travel to Packer Park to face Glen Eira/Old McKinnon, whilst the top of the table Parkdale Vultures return to their home turf to play Mazenod.
PEGS are on the road once again to come up against the Hampton Rovers. This promises to be an exciting game with both teams making positive starts to the season. Marcellin have shown they have potential and will be looking for a victory against the winless Oakleigh who they face at Scammell Reserve.
