Meet the new coaches leading VAFA Women’s clubs in 2024

As we edge closer to pre-season beginning the coaching appointments continue to be made and announced across the VAFA.

VAFA Media takes a look at some of the key women’s coaching announcements across the rest of the competition.

For the full list of positions still available, click here.

The Mugars couldn’t be more excited with the announcement that Colleen Gwynne has agreed to be the Senior Head Coach for 2024.

Affectionately known as Gwynney, she came across to the Mugs in 2022 to lend a hand and the club couldn’t let her go from there.

Gwynney’s resume in footy speaks for itself boasting 14 premierships, including an AFLW premiership with the Adelaide Crows in 2017.

The MUWFC is excited at the prospect of what Gwynney can bring to this group as they aim to climb up the ladder in 2024.

Old Camberwell is delighted to announce that Nick Hooper will take over as head coach of the Women’s program in 2024.

Hooper’s daughter Emma is part of the Wellers playing group. She has been a staple in the side since 2020. Hooper takes on the role with heavy coaching experience in footy and cricket.

He is also passionate about women’s footy, having most recently coached the U18 youth girls at Camberwell Sharks JFC for four years.

“We are all here to win, but that aim sits hand in hand with personal and team development and having a good time along the way.” Hooper told the Wellers website.

Mazenod are excited about the appointment of Matt Foale to the position of the clubs senior women’s coach in 2024.

Foale has coached over 400 games across Aussie rules football, and basketball. Having won junior domestic titles, representative basketball titles across both men’s and women’s competitions.

Foale has always been connected to the area having played junior footy for Glen Waverley Rovers, before senior stints at Mulgrave and Waverley. He joined Chadstone in the VAFA in the early 90’s.

Foale is excited about the opportunity to take the reins at the Nodders next season, “I take pride in helping players develop, and employ a team first approach, to allow everyone to be the best they can be.” he told the Mazenod website.

“As a coach, I focus on ensuring that football is fun and engaging, and create an environment that is welcoming and supportive, with a view to forging friendships and making memories for life. I’m really looking forward to heading up the women’s program for the year ahead.”

The North Brunswick Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of our Senior Women’s Coach for 2024 – Siobhan O’Dwyer.

O’Dwyer is an experienced and well credentialed football coach, with years of experience coaching girls and senior women’s football teams. Siobhan has worked with Collingwood and St. Kilda Next Gen Academy, South East Interleague and Yarra Magpies girls teams.

O’Dwyer has also coached Worawa all Indigenous Academy for five years as well as experience with several other VAFA clubs, most recently with the Preston Bullants in 2023.

O’Dwyer has a passion for local football and womens sports. With a Level 2 Coaching Qualification, as well as a Diploma of Sport Management and a Cert IV in Training & Assessment.

Siobhan is more than equipped to help the North Brunswick girls learn and grow in 2024.

The Razorbacks are thrilled to announce the appointment of Boz Todorovic as senior coach of our women’s team in 2024.

Boz has most recently been the coach of the Essendon Football Club Neale Daniher Next Generation NGA Squad, and as an assistant coach with Williamstown VFLW and the Glen Orden Hawks.

He was also head of development at Melbourne University Women’s Football Club with stints as senior coach at representative level for the RDFNL and AFL Multicultural National Elite Talent Program.

Box Hill North are thrilled to announce our inaugural Senior Women’s VAFA coach, Steve Jackson.

Steve joins us after many successful years coaching Junior and Senior Women’s football, taking his teams to four Grand Finals in his last five seasons.

This exciting news means Box Hill North will field an open-age women’s team in the VAFA competition for season 2024.

They are beyond excited for this next chapter of their Club.
