Tonners on the road to sustained success

It couldn’t have been scripted any better than this. Newcomers to the William Buck Premier Women’s competition, Old Scotch, up against reigning premiers St Kevin’s in a bid for a grand final contest against Kew. However, St Kevin’s did what they do best and overpowered Old Scotch by 31 points to set up an epic rematch of last year’s Grand Final.
The stage was set for a big morning at Elsternwick Park, but the game was on St Kevin’s terms the whole time, setting the precedent for the day with a massive 29 points scored in the first half to Old Scotch’s one behind.
The second half was much slower, with victory ultimately set up in the first half of the match.
The Saints’ usual suspects were up and about, with Catherine Stanton a clear bear on ground after a three-goal performance. Margaret Gleeson, Bree Doyle and Emily Condon were also among the best.
Mia Caffry capped off her stellar season to once again be named the best for Old Scotch. Despite it being a tough day for the Stars, they must be commended for all their hard work this season and did extremely well to get to the preliminary final.
Next week, we are going to witness a great Grand Final rematch with Kew out for revenge after last year’s defeat. It’ll all be kicking off at 2:30pm at Elsternwick Park and we’ll be hoping for a big turn out to congratulate both teams on their continued dominance this season.
If last year’s Grand Final is anything to go off, it’ll be close until the death. Both teams were sitting equal with 2.4 apiece at the final break in last season’s Grand Final, but it was St Kevin’s experience which saw them soar to a 23-point victory after powering away in the final quarter and keeping Kew scoreless.
Jessica Joyce and Sarah Cameron both had 2 goals apiece, whilst Teah Stepan was best on ground for the first time that season.
So, how will it all play out on Sunday? Can Kew continue their dominance over St Kevin’s in the 2023 season; having not lost to them in any of their three encounters this year? Will Kew avenge last year’s Grand Final demons and claim victory? Or will St Kevin’s pull off the three-peat? It’s going to be a must watch game to cap off an excellent 2023 season for the William Buck Premier Women’s competition.
