One team fails big challenge whilst Coburg edge closer to the top 4

Old Scotch continued their run to be a genuine premiership contender, rolling over the top of Caulfield Grammarians by 53 points on Saturday. Maggie Mahony set the tone for the day, registering four of the Cardinals’ 11 goals.

The tone for the game was set in the first half, kicking 6.7 by halftime in contrast with Grammarians’ seven points. In saying this, the Cardinals’ accuracy was at times worrying, registering six behinds in the second quarter. Luckily, they were able to correct this after half time, kicking only five behinds for the rest of the game.

Lucy Morley and Mietta Kendall were also impressive for Scotch with two goals each, but it was Ella Sciberras who was the best on ground, also finishing with a goal. On a tough day for Caulfield, Ellie Cleland was their best.

Old Scotch will play Coburg next week, whilst Caulfield have the bye to reset.

Kew continued their dominance with a win over Fitzroy, but credit must be given to Fitzroy for keeping it to a 20-point margin. The game was a lot more even than many may have thought in the first quarter, with Kew holding only a two-point lead at half time.

However, Kew turned on the jets in the third quarter, kicking two goals to Fitzroy’s singular behind. Inaccuracy from both sides kept it to a very low scoring game. Zara Flanigan was Fitzroy’s singular goal scorer to be their best, whilst Eleanor Brown also had a goal to be one of Kew’s best.

Fitzroy have a tough challenge at Righetti Oval next Saturday to take on St Kevin’s, whilst Kew will play Melbourne Uni on Sunday afternoon.

Coburg jumped up to fifth spot on the ladder, recovering from a tough loss to St Kevin’s last weekend, with an 11-point victory over West Brunswick.

The margin threatened to be a lot bigger, with Coburg kicking 3.9 for the game. West Brunswick were on the front foot for the first half, with it all tied up at half time. It was still close in the third quarter, with Coburg taking a 3-point advantage into the final change.

It came down to the final quarter, where Coburg ultimately came out on top with 1.3 to the Magpies’ one point. Teagan Brett was the clear best on ground, kicking two goals for the Lions. Taylah Watson was the best for West Brunswick.

Coburg will host in-form Old Scotch next round, as West Brunswick travel to face Collegians.

Collegians failed a big test against St Kevin’s on the weekend, losing by 34 points. A strong first quarter, and inaccuracy from St Kevin’s, meant the margin was only five points at the first change, and only a one goal difference at the main break.

However, St Kevin’s ran away with the game in the third quarter, kicking 27 points to Collegians’ solitary behind. Collegians only managed to register one goal for the rest of the game.

Theresa McCafferty and Georgia Harris were Collegians’ only goal scorers for the game, whilst Jenna Colwell was their best. Catherine Stanton had another impressive game with three goals to take her goalkicking tally to 23 for the season. Stanton still leads the competitions goalkicker count.

St Kevin’s will host Fitzroy next weekend, whilst Collegians will host West Brunswick.
