There has been much discussion in recent weeks about the structure of the AFL’s mid-season bye rounds beyond 2023.
Last night on AFL360, Essendon coach Brad Scott suggested going forward, the AFL have a one-week competition bye, and for the AFL to put the focus on community football.
Speaking on RSN927 Breakfast with Harf, CEO of the VAFA Jason Reddick “absolutely endorses” Scott’s comments, and can not only see the benefits to that being the case for VAFA clubs on the field, but also off the field.
“The benefits to community clubs and community sport would be enormous to have a supporter base that would be engaged in AFL come back and attend local footy” said Reddick.
“To attend in both atmosphere and engage in what the offerings are, just even the commercial benefits for clubs as well it would be great.”
“I think the focus can still be there on football, it’s just directed at community football and the engagement from everyone at community level.” he continued.

“On the playing front, one of the major things that we’re facing, players going overseas and travelling for the first time in four years. Kids that haven’t gone away during COVID years, they’re all going at once.
And, we’ve got umpires overseas as well. That’s really putting a strain on clubs, I think it’s a catch up situation. I think it’ll level itself next year and beyond.”
“It’s holding up given the circumstances, across Australian sport everyone is feeling the pinch especially in the space of volunteers. Clubs are having to restructure their volunteer operations”
“Andrew’s connections to the Amateurs, he’s been fantastic in his support ongoing. They tell me the ratings were three times what they normally are, maybe there’s a career for him once he hangs up the mantle at the AFL.”
“Big V Women and Men are playing against Western Australian amateur football comp, that’ll be a great showcase to come out and have a look at the best amateur on show against the two biggest leagues on show”
