Roys and Snowdog’s Remain Undefeated in a Thrilling Round of Footy

Premier B football was greeted with splendid weather on Saturday as perfect conditions set up for close encounters across the board. It was a highly anticipated round of footy that continued to see some sides dominate and others struggling to keep up. 

It was tipped to be a close clash between Beaumaris and St Bernard’s but the Snowdog’s made a big statement on Saturday as they comfortably accounted for the Sharks by 39 points.

Played out at the Snakepit, St Bernard’s had 10 shots on goal in the opening quarter, but inaccuracy saw them sitting on a 16-point lead at the quarter time break. The second quarter saw the Snowdog’s hit their straps and with five goals to one and from there they kicked away. Despite a goalless last quarter the Snowdog’s have planted themselves as the major threat in Premier B.

Dominic Sullivan led from the front for St Bernard’s with three goals along with Marcus Holland who also registered three majors. Meanwhile Charlie Vague has maintained his glorious start to the year with another best on ground performance for the Snowdog’s. As for Beaumaris, the weekend’s defeat was their first of the season but with plenty of talent at the Sharks this year they will no doubt be able to rebound. 

De La Salle were back in the winners circle this week after a straightforward 82-point win over AJAX to claim the Bernie Sheehy Cup. With 10 goals in the opening half of football, De La Salle were able to dominate the midfield battle and won most of the contested ball with a familiar name hitting the scoreboard in Adrian Indovino who booted four majors.

De La Salle had 10 individual goal kickers and will take a world of confidence from the win after a tough loss to St Bernard’s in round 2. Meanwhile AJAX have continued to struggle through the beginning of the season as they try and build up some experience in their young list.

They were competitive in round 2 against Trinity but inaccuracy let them down against De La Salle and despite a gallant effort from Remy Spicer they couldn’t stick on. 

The other big win in Premier B came from St Bedes/Mentone Tigers who were dominant against Williamstown CYMS. Caleb Lewis had a day to remember with six goals and a best on ground performance for the Tigers. With only 18 points in it at three quarter time the Tigers were able to withstand the attack from Williamstown with the end margin being 30 points.

Williamstown were competitive throughout the afternoon Harrison Miller kicked three goals to keep his side in the contest along with Liam Conway who starred for Williamstown. Williamstown are another side with a young list but have shown to be competitive and no doubt there will be some wins to follow on from their efforts. 

The final two games of the round turned out to be tight tussles with Old Trinity winning by just five points against Monash Blues. Old Trinity were out of the blocks well and had the early jump ahead of the Blues with an 18 point lead at the first break. From there however, Monash hit back keeping Trinity to just one goal in the second quarter with the half time margin cut back to four points.

Nicholas Darling was influential in mounting his side’s effort with four majors while both Charlie and Sam Simpson were dominant around the ball. The blues led at the final change by one point but Trinity ended up on top in the last quarter kicking two more goals.

Young Myles Scott had a day out with six goals and fan favourite Harry Thompson was huge for Trinity when it mattered. 

The second thriller saw Fitzroy just get over the line against Old Geelong by a single point. It was a classic ding-dong battle that saw both the main break and the final change separate the sides also by one point. Sam Barnett enjoyed three goals with the home crowd behind him with Nicholas Dixon also becoming influential for Old Geelong.

Fitzroy, however, now remain undefeated thanks to three goals to Jack McKay who was busy down forward along with Charlie Faubel and Jack Hart. Nino Lazzaro was also outstanding for the Roys as they continued with St Bernard’s to emerge as potential candidates to take the title in 2023. 

So, what is there to look forward to in round four?

AJAX will have the challenge of heading to the Snakepit to take on the undefeated St Bernard’s. It’s a tough task for AJAX with St Bernard’s continuing to be impressive this season.

Monash Blues will host De La Salle and will be looking to record their maiden Premier B win this season after coming so close in round 3.

Beaumaris will take on the young Williamstown side which will see Williamstown also searching for their first win this season while Old Geelong will be looking to go one better than round 3 as they take on St Bedes/Mentone.

The final game of the round will involve ladder leaders Fitzroy up against Old Trinity at the Brunswick Street Oval. Trinity have the talent in their side to knock off the Roys but will have to bring their A-game which we know is quality.

It will be a great contest to keep an eye on so round 4 is sure to bring us many more talking points to discuss at the weekend’s conclusion.
