A weekend of slippery ovals and muddy football boots set the scene for the commencement of Premier B Women’s. It’s a new-look competition following the women’s re-structure resulting in no Premier C this year.
The Monash Blues kicked off the season strong at their home ground with convincing confidence, claiming a win against Aquinas Old Collegians.
The Blues had success from the get-go scoring two goals in the first term and one in each of the other periods. They were well-defended from the first quarter holding dominance throughout the entirety of the game. Aquinas tried their best to withhold the Blues, scoring two behinds early in the game but struggled to continue and leave their mark.
Contributing to the victory for the Blues was Molly McFarlane who displayed great skill, kicking two goals, making her the leading goalkicker. Ainslee Elliotts’ undeniable power and determination was recognised by many, making her best on field. Can they continue their triumph in round two against the St Bedes/Mentone Tigers who are coming off a week with no game?
Unfortunately, Aquinas missed the mark on this occasion but with players such as best-on-ground Dianna Haines success may be on the horizon. Will a week off instil them with the confidence needed against Richmond Central in round three?
The Old Yarra Cobras rose to the occasion possessing strength at the home ground of the Brunswick Football Club. On the contrary, not for the lack of trying, the attempts of the Brunswick Renegades were unsuccessful only accomplishing one goal compared to the Cobras six goals and six behinds.
It was an extraordinary start to the season for Iliana Zarfiriou who executed four goals making her a goal kicking machine for the Cobras. Exhibiting strength not just as a team but an individual player was Georgia Hatton who was judged as best on field.
Although the tireless efforts of the Brunswick ladies resulted in a loss, Jessica Briggs managed to score her first goal of the season, with hopes of many more. Her accomplishment culminated in her acquiring player of the match for Brunswick.
Can the Cobras construct a winning streak against Richmond Central? Does every cloud have its silver lining, for Brunswick who will compete against the Hawthorn Amateur Football Club? These questions will be determined in round two.
The ladies of North Brunswick sadly had the same misfortunes at their home ground, against opposing Hawthorn Amateur Football Club who celebrated their adventure to glory.
North Brunswick cannot be discounted for their efforts, kicking 13 behinds with great persistence and determination, whilst defending to the best of their abilities resulting in a 13-point margin. The efforts of the best on ground, Dever Adams, was an immense contribution alongside Monique Goates and Fiona Spitzkowsky just to name a few. North Brunswick will now hit the road to the roots of Mazenod for round 2.
It was the Hawks who reigned supreme making senior coach Simon Brownhill proud, with goal kicking superstars such as Kayla May Smith, victoriously scoring three goals and operating smoothly alongside best on field Emogen Johnson.
Will the Hawks kick it up a notch at their home ground against Brunswick’s other representative team? North Brunswick will now hit the road to the roots of Mazenod Old Collegians Football Club for round 2.
Kicking off the season with a tight match, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats was Mazenod Old Collegians and Richmond Central, with a result of only a two point margin but on this occasion Richmond Central were victorious.
Within the first term, Mazenod were in the lead with one behind, creating the only action within the first quarter. This was until fortunately for Richmond Central one goal executed by leading goal scorer Stephanie Talarico, as well as four behinds kicked by the players at the beginning of the second period. An incredible best-on-field performance was displayed by Tenille Moselen assisting the ladies from Richmond to get over the line.
In great efforts to catch up, Mazenod persisted and although everything had been done by goal kicker Kiara Lo Surdo and best player Charlotte Skinner to make the team succeed, it was evident their one goal and two behinds was not going to be enough to obtain supremacy.
With Mazenod playing on their home ground in their upcoming game it is great hope and anticipation that they can pull their team over the line with their first win for the season. Richmond Central are set to travel to the habitat of the Old Yarra Cobras with their heads held high.
It is the Monash Blues who are feeling quite the opposite of Blue, situated at the top of the ladder but not far in the distance is the hiss of the Old Yarra Cobras. In early days, with an amazing effort it is Iliana Zarfiriou from the Cobras leading with four goals, closely followed by Kayla May Smith from hawthorn with three goals. The lineup from the Monash Blues is looking secure with Molly Mcfarlene sitting on two goals and Brook Thompson and Caitlin Williams on one goal each, attaining third, fourth and fifth place.
