MCC Football Club co-coach, Rebecca Ticli, was recently recognised for her role in the rise of the women’s team this season and awarded the 2021 BHP Community Coach of the Year Award.
Coaches from junior and youth girls to senior women’s were eligible to win the award and must have demonstrated exceptional support of women’s football and gender equality.
Ticli, who accepted the role of the Division 4 side alongside Melbourne FC champion Russell Robertson earlier this year, was nominated by Dees players, Renee Hayward, Aish Ravi and Jade Wulkan.
“It is an honour that I didn’t expect, I didn’t even know I was nominated,” Ticli told AFL Media’s Sarah Black on the AFL Women’s website.
“I am really proud because it reflects the hard work and effort that was put into this season, and it’s a credit to that work because it shows that the culture is strong at the MCC and that we’re building something that can go into the future.”
MCC were set to play off in the Division 4 Women’s preliminary final prior to the cancellation of the season after defeating De La Salle by five points in the elimination final and on the back of five wins from their nine home and away games.
The team ranked fourth in points scored and third in points against.
“Over the last couple of years, as an individual and as a coach, Bec has proactively taken steps to educate herself on what motivates people, the issues that matter to those people and how she can be an active and evolving part of improving and developing those people in a safe and welcoming environment,” the nomination of Ticli read.
“Despite being hugely successful as a player herself and now as a coach and teacher, she continues to be humble and embrace any opportunity to learn and grow as a person.”
The VAFA congratulates Rebecca on an outstanding achievement and looks forward to seeing what MCC can do in 2022.
