2022 Total Team Points Cap/Budget & Player Permit Application Process

Sam Confait – GM, Football & Umpire Operations

The VAFA Board met on Monday 16 August and considered recommendations for the Total Team Points cap for the 2022 season and a new VAFA Player Permit Application Process. Please see the following updates:

  • All men’s senior competitions will be allocated a Total Team Points cap/budget of 45 points for the 2022 season in accordance with the AFL Victoria Player Points System Policy and VAFA Rules
  • Coming into effect on November 1, 2021, the VAFA will introduce a new Player Permit Application Process which will become a key operational function of the current Independent Permit Committee (PC) and VAFA Independent Integrity Division (IID)
  • The purpose of the VAFA Player Permit Application Process is to introduce a more rigorous and transparent process into the VAFA to ensure all players are upholding and abiding by the VAFA Amateur Status Guidelines. All Category 5- and 6- point players transferring into the VAFA for the upcoming season will be required to complete this process prior to being granted a permit to play in the VAFA. The VAFA also reserves the right to request that a player shall complete the VAFA Player Permit Application Form even if they are not a Category 5- or 6-point player
  • Please see below the AFL Victoria Player Points Allocation criteria relevant to this process:
    • If a player does not meet the Category 1 ‘home player’ eligibility above, their points Category will be assessed based on the highest playing level achieved prior to the player joining the current club in the following Categories:

Category 6 – AFL Player – 6 Points

Player who has played a minimum of one AFL game in any of the current or previous three (3) Seasons.

Category 5 – State League Tier One – 5 Points

Player who has played a minimum 5 senior games of VFL, WAFL or SANFL in any of the current or previous three (3) seasons.

School- aligned VAFA Club Criteria

For a player to qualify for a school club as 1 point, he must have attended the aligned school from year 7 onwards for a minimum of 3 years

University-aligned VAFA Club Criteria

For a player to qualify for a university club as 1 point, he must be currently enrolled and studying full time or is a graduated alumnus at the aligned institute

  • The VAFA Player Permit Application online form and further information about the VAFA Player Permit Application Process will be communicated to clubs via the VAFA Club Portal from October

We extend our thank you to the Independent Permit Committee, Independent Integrity Division, Men’s Premier Sections Advisory Group and those clubs who provided feedback for their contribution to improving a cornerstone of our Association.
