Compared to the nail-biting launch of 2021 – a round that featured three close games – Round 2 provided some comfortable wins to early frontrunners in Premier B Women’s.
Kicking off the round in the early game at Como Park, Old Geelong bounced back from a tight loss and defeated Melbourne University by 23 points. The margin was only one straight kick at three quarter time, but Geelong pulled away in the last quarter with a three-goal surge to record their first victory. Isabel Currenti kicked two goals and was in the best players for the hosts, whilst Asha Price kicked two for Melbourne.
Over at Brunswick St Oval, Fitzroy-ACU continued the trend of home sides taking the points, beating Monash Blues by 18 points. The Roy’s were in the box seat from the opening bounce, extending their lead throughout the course of the game until the final siren. Things could have been worse for Monash, down by 20 points at half time, but strong performances from Ainslee Elliott and Emily Conroy helped the Blues to limit the end margin.
Old Camberwell recorded their first win for this year, defeating a wasteful Collegians side by 15 points. The only three goals of the game were scored by Camberwell in the first quarter, with the game descending into a low-scoring arm wrestle afterwards. Collegians kicked six behinds as they failed to score a major, serving as an example of the old football adage ‘bad kicking is bad football’. They will look to learn from this to turn around an 0-2 start to season 2021. Louise Anderson was the best for the Wellers, and Tara Goss can hold her head high for the away side.
Beaumaris made it four from four for the home sides this week, beating Yarra Old Grammarians by 22 points in a high scoring affair. Yarra started strongest, kicking four goals and leading at the first break, but the Sharks asserted their dominance afterwards, kicking five goals to one. Zoe Barbakos kicked three for Beaumaris, and Jamie Bond was best on the ground. Georgia Hatton and Kalarni Kearns led the way for the Bushrangers.
This set of results leaves Beaumaris and Fitzroy locked on an identical % at the top of the table, whilst Collegians and Monash will rue missed opportunities that have them at 0-2 at this early point of the season.
