Yarra reappoint Wines as senior women’s coach

Yarra reappoint Wines as senior women’s coach

Yarra Old Grammarians

Yarra Old Grammarians is excited to reappoint senior women’s coach Michael Wines for the 2021 season to further develop the women’s program and push towards William Buck Premier – a club first.

Off the back of a first finals campaign for both seniors and reserves teams as well as a senior premiership, the club plans to continue the momentum and aspires to field three senior women’s teams for the first time in 2021.

Michael was named the VAFA Women’s Premier Coach of the Year in 2019 after leading the team to the Premier C flag with a 21-point grand final victory over Brunswick Renegades. He has been the key driver for creating a culture at Yarra that nurtures belonging, player development and promotes support networks.

The Yarra Women’s Program has grown considerably in the last two years from a handful of players to almost 100 girls on the training track in 2020.

“The club is keen for Michael to keep building on the hard work that he and his team put in for the non-2020 season and the premiership year before that,” club President Ben Seeger said.

Michael is excited to turn the challenges faced this year into an advantage for the 2021 season and said they’d “built an exceptionally resilient program that will only be stronger because of COVID”.

“The girls are amazing, they enjoy each other’s company, support one another and are hungry to improve,” he said.

“All of the coaches have done a fantastic job fast-tracking player development. As a program, we are all moving in the same direction and moving quickly. Hopefully, that leads to more success and promotion to William Buck Premier.”

The club is on the hunt for a senior men’s coach after Rob Drew recently stepped down. Further information on the role and how to apply can be found HERE
