Mourant’s seven goal haul powers St John’s to victory
After playing away for the first two rounds of the season, Whitefriars held off a fast-finishing Canterbury to claim a six-point victory at home and remain as one of three
Semi-Final 2: St Francis Xavier v Albert Park
With Harrison Coe and Daniel Chin leading the charge, minor premiers St Francis Xavier will await their second semi-final clash against Albert Park with great anticipation and the irrefutable goal to secure the first ticket to Division 4 Grand Final action. Having beaten the Falcons on both occasions during the year, including a 48-point win in Round 15 and a far closer 10-point victory in Round 1, the X-Men will fancy their chances in this big opportunity game. No easy beats themselves, look no further than their 60-point masterclass over finals hungry Eley Park in their last match in Round 17, the well-rested Albert Park (who come off a timely bye fixture in Round 18) are in the best position possible to down the minor premiers.
Semi-Final 1: Elsternwick v La Trobe University
Coming off an unexpectedly major 105-point loss to minor premiers, St Francis Xavier, in Round 18, Elsternwick has everything to prove in this “do or die” semi-final against La Trobe University. On the two occasions these sides have met in 2019, the Wickers have left with the premiership points thanks to an eight-point victory in Round 13 and a 30-point win in Round 2. In their last 11 games, Elsternwick have only stumbled against second placed Albert Park by 11 points in Round 16 and the X-Men last weekend – an ideal run into a pressure cooker final. With a similarly enviable run heading into this first weekend of finals, encapsulated by their huge three-point triumph over St Francis in Round 17, the Trobers have won their last five consecutive matches, however, for the year, have only managed to beat one of the top three sides on that aforementioned Round 17 occasion.
