Fields outclass OGs as Blues lock up top spot

Tash Gunawardana

Third-placed Caulfield Grammarians outclassed bottom of the ladder Old Geelong by 42 points at Glenhuntly Oval. Caulfield were solid all over the ground and came out strongly in the opening quarter with three goals and seven behinds. In their defensive 50, they were solid as well, as they kept Old Geelong scoreless in the first term. Old Geelong struggled to get their hands on the ball in the first half and only managed to score a goal in the second quarter. The third quarter was similar to the first term for Old Geelong, they were kept scoreless and Caulfield Grammarians inaccuracy towards goal was again an issue with them registering two goals and five behinds. In the final term, Caulfield Grammarians struggled to register a major with Old Geelong slotting through the only goal of the quarter. Caulfield Grammarians had many forward entries and shots at goal, but their inaccurate goal kicking let them down, as they kicked a total of 16 behinds. The goal kickers for Caulfield Grammarians were Laura Tiernan, Georgina Phillips, Emily Hastie, Amelia Hines, Kate Macqueen, Joanna Davy and Chloe Leighton. For Old Geelong there were only two goal scorers with Danielle Trott and Anna Brodie. With the huge win Caulfield Grammarians go two games clear of fourth placed Old Camberwell with one round remaining, while the Oggettes will win the wooden spoon for Premier B Women’s.

A crucial 36-point victory by Old Xaverians over Collegians at Albert Park allows them to lock up a top two spot. Old Xaverians came out with intent and ferociousness in the first quarter slotting through the only two goals of the term, as Collegians only managed to kick two behinds. It was a low scoring second term with only one goal scored from Collegians as Old Xaverians were kept scoreless. Old Xaverians came out all guns blazing in the second half, they piled on five majors and were also strong defensively keeping Collegians to a solitary behind. There were no multiple goal scorers for Old Xaverians, they had seven individual goal kickers including Jenifer Barker, Imogen Milford, Gabby Golds, Grace Knox, Alice Keith, Annabel Nichols and Indiarna Ellis. The only player who managed to pop up and nail through a goal for Collegians was Rebecca Rothfield. With the win, Old Xaverians remain on the same amount of wins as ladder leaders Monash Blues while the Collegians loss means there chances of making the top four have been diminished, as they are two games away with one round left in the season.

Monash Blues were 16-point victors over Old Camberwell at Frearson Oval and have truly cemented top spot on the Premier B Women’s ladder with one round remaining. It was an evenly matched opening quarter from both teams with only three points the deficit at quarter time. Monash Blues lifted their intensity and pressure in the second term, they nailed through two majors and were solid defensively keeping Old Camberwell scoreless. Old Camberwell gained back some momentum in the second half, as they outscored Monash Blues one goal and three behinds to one goal and four behinds. Xanthea Dewez was the only multiple goal kicker in the match contributing two goals for Monash Blues. Old Camberwells Deanna Booth and Amelia Robison kicked a goal apiece. Despite the loss, Old Camberwell will remain fourth with fifth placed Collegians also losing in the round with one game left till the regular season finishes.
