A major scalp, final quarter fightbacks, streaks mount and the battle of the birds ends in reliable hands. Premier B Football returned and delivered in Round 9.
In a ferocious final term, where they piled on four-goals-to-one, Beaumaris claimed one of the biggest upsets so far this year, downing an inaccurate University Blacks by 18 points. Separated by just three points entering the final stanza, it was a Brent Lynch bomb from 50m out which set the wheels in motion for the Sharks. Matthew Petering, Joshua Trew and Jak Nardino all supplied majors following Lynch’s effort, cementing the Sharks fourth win on the year in fine fashion. Callum Heath was adjudged Beaumaris’ best for his dominant performance in the ruck, while Blacks midfielder Jarrod Carlson was named best on for his side. The victory keeps the Sharks in fifth and just a game out of the four, while the Blacks (3rd) fall to 6-3, sitting two games behind Scotch (2nd).
A hunger for the ball and a stifling defence was the name of the game for the St Bedes/Mentone Tigers in this one. Surviving an early first-quarter scare to hold the Monash Blues goalless for the second and third terms, SBMT claimed their fourth consecutive victory after running out comfortable 45-point winners. Watching their opponents fifth major fly over their heads at the 26-minute mark of the opening term, the Tigers would proceed to kick the next eight in a row, keeping the Blues goalless until the 5-minute mark of the final quarter. Nathan Fahey booted five for SBMT while Zac Calvez was instrumental in defence, earning BOG honours. Nicolas Petering kicked three for the Blues while Zacc Ledin was adjudged his side’s best. The victory keeps the Tigers in fourth, a game clear of the Sharks, while the Blues remain on the bottom of the table.
Another special Julian Dobosz performance up-forward has helped Caulfield Grammarians claim their ninth consecutive victory on the year, downing Old Geelong by 32-points and keeping their record unblemished in 2019. Trailing by 13 points entering the final quarter, the streak was in real danger of coming to an end, enter Julian Dobosz. The Fields would proceed to kick eight of the final nine goals of the game, with five of them coming off the boot of the key forward, bagging seven on the day in a best of ground performance. Sam Anderson and John Simson both booted three for the OGs, as Simson was adjudged best afield for his club. The win keeps the Fields’ a game clear atop the table while the OGs (7th) fall to 3-6, two games behind the Tigers who currently occupy 4th.
Final quarter fightbacks were a trend in Round 9, as Old Scotch provided one of their own in their 30-point victory over Parkdale Vultures. Trailing by 10 points at three-quarter time, Scotch went on to boot seven unanswered majors in the last, but unlike Julian Dobosz five-goal haul, Josh Halsall was the only Cardinal to register more than one major in the final term. Dylan Gilbert, Tom McKinley, Jack Slobom, Lachlan Byrne-Jones and Jack Edwards all joined in on the action to lift Scotch to the eighth win of the year. Halsall and Tom Downie each booted three apiece, with Downie adjudged best afield. Liam Marshall kicked four for the Vultures while Andrew Watterson was named his sides best on the day. With the win, Scotch still sit just one-game behind the Fields’ for top spot, while the Vultures go to 3-6, also sitting two-games behind the fourth placed Tigers.
Our final clash of the round saw Old Haileyburians eclipse an early deficit to run out 21-point victors over Fitzroy. A goalless first term and 11-point deficit at half time was quickly forgotten after the Bloods piled on six-goals-to-one in the third quarter, taking a commanding lead they’d never relinquish. Old Haileybury’s two-headed monster up forward, Sam Loewe and Durras Seccull, combined for seven majors while Peter Shakallis was electrifying in the middle, earning BOG honours. Nathan Jumeau kicked three for the Roys while defender Max Ellis was his side’s best. The Bloods join the group at 3-6 while the Roys’ stay in ninth with just two wins.
