Ormond retained the Buxton Cup after securing another win over Hampton Rovers by 21 points away from home in their Division 1 grand final replay from 2018. An early four goals for the Monders going into the second quarter made all the difference in this clash, as the Rovers trailed for the rest of the game whilst matching Ormond’s output. A handy three goals each for Captain Tom Buckley and Henry Simon helped get their side across the line, with Dae Sydlik recognised as best on and the recipient of the Barnes Family Medal for a second consecutive year. Amongst the Rovers best was Daniel Corp after booting two goals for his side. In Round 3, a fresh Ormond 22 will return home to face Old Mentonians in a fight to remain unbeaten whilst the Rovers will be chasing their first win of the season in a home clash against a tough Marcellin side.
A much-needed win for Ajax over Old Ivanhoe marks the end to their eight-game losing streak originating from last season, and a sign of things to come under new senior coach Adam Andrews. In a hotly contested match early, with only three points in it at quarter time, the Jackas stamped out any hope the Hoers might’ve had by continuing to outscore them in every quarter to follow. Ajax demonstrated a hearty team display as 10 of their men were able to record a major. With two goals and the BOG accolade for Ajax, Nick Cohen has proven to be invaluable for a second consecutive week. After the Easter break, an uplifted Ajax has the chance to ride this momentum at home when they challenge a Mazenod side yet to obtain a victory. Old Ivanhoe face PEGS away from home in a battle for their first win of the season.
Williamstown CYMS secured four premiership points after defeating Mazenod in what was an interesting clash at Central Reserve. A remarkable early surge from Mazenod put the CY’s on edge with a three-goal lead at the first break, but from this point on it was all Williamstown as they slowly but surely turned the tables. With six goals to three in the second quarter, and down by only one point at the half, the CY’s kept the Nodders to only a couple goals for the remainder whilst booting eight of their own. For the victors, Ben Deller bagged five goals and Jack Connelly continued with another superb performance. Jarryd Raffa was named best for Mazenod. Williamstown CYMS travel to Gordon Barnard Reserve for a Round 3 clash against Old Camberwell, which should be a tightly contested affair. Mazenod is also on the road yearning for a victory against an Ajax side gunning to continue their winnings ways.
In a match that went down to the wire, it was Old Camberwell who prevailed by less than a goal to defeat Marcellin away from home. The Eagles contested right until the end and even led at the third term, but just fell short as Camberwell kicked five goals late to upset the home crowd. The Wellers will be ecstatic with their clutch back-to-back wins by less than a goal. It was Scott Kaiser’s six goals which forced the issue with the support of Simon Bennett and Chris Hensby who were amongst the best. Marcellin’s Jeremiah Antypas and Ashley Viney were the biggest contributors for their side. In what is shaping up to be the most exciting clash of Round 3, Old Camberwell Grammarians take on Williamstown CYMS, with both sides needing to run a tight ship to maintain their perfect 2019 run. Marcellin will head to Boss James Reserve to face the Hampton Rovers as they attempt to move to 2-1 for the season and push Hampton further down the ladder.
Old Mentonians are 2-0 for the season with a six-point away win over PEGS. The Panthers held a comfortable lead for the majority of the contest but a late resurgence from PEGS, including six fourth-quarter goals, nearly turned the game upside down. For the victors, Bryce Damin played a BOG performance, while Max Rothberg and Benjamin Nicoll bagged three goals apiece. PEGS best included Brett Hannah and Max Philpot. Old Mentonians head down to E.E. Gunn Reserve in Round 3 for an intriguing encounter with an impressive Ormond line-up looking to secure top spot. PEGS are expecting Old Ivanhoe after the break, with both teams aiming to fill the win column for the first time this season.

“In 2016, the club nearly folded and shut the doors. But eight years later, we’re up three Divisions and have won 2 Senior premierships and a Reserves flag. To see
