St Kevin’s OB claimed their second consecutive William Buck Premier flag when they defeated Collegians by five points in a thriller at Elsternwick Park.
Led by a five-goal haul from star forward and Jock Nelson Medallist Billy Kanakis, SKOB increased an 11-point half time lead to 31 at the final break thanks to a four-goal third term.
In similar circumstances to last season, the Lions fought back valiantly in the final quarter with five goals to one but couldn’t edge past their rivals in the dying moments as SKOB’s defence stood tall.
Lachlan Sullivan was outstanding through the SKOB midfield, while fellow young star Lachlan Farrugia played years beyond his age with an incredible display down back. Nick Wood and Anthony Lynch were both instrumental in setting SKOB up through the midfield with their attack on the ball and Gerard Gleeson gave his strongest performance of the finals series.
Sam Hibbins dished out one of his best performances and continued the trend of stepping up in big games for the Lions, winning contested ball, clearances and taking contested marks at will. George Burbury stood up in the final term, while Lachie Ferguson kicked four goals.
The win is SKOB’s second A-Grade/Premier flag in its 71-year history after winning their first last season.
