Mugars climb into 2nd, SKOB surge into contention

Kew v Marcellin (3.11 29 – 3.5 23)

Kew reversed their fortunes after a loss in Round 1 to the reigning premiers, defeating the Sheagles by just 5 points at Victoria Park. Kew dominated the match, accumulating almost twice the amount of scoring shots as Marcellin but were rather inaccurate with 3.11. Despite the Bears’ relentless pressure, Marcellin were well in the contest and by half time led by two points before the Bears put the foot down in the second half. Dani Calautti, coming off the back of a sensational Big V performance last weekend in Adelaide, was outstanding and led from the front for her side with 23 touches and a goal, while Michaela Harding and Dani Sibosado also racked up 16 touches a piece. Marcellin’s Angie Wang-Hartman and Brianne Keogh were best afield for the Sheagles in their nail-biting loss, while Laura Robertson was also a key influence with 16 disposals.

Caulfield Grammarians v Fitzroy-ACU (1.11 17 – 4.2 26)

Fitzroy-ACU continue their chase for a top 4 spot after accuracy in front of goal helped them defeat Caulfield Grammarians by nine points. Leading by 10 points at half time, the Roys were outplayed by the Fields in the third but seven straight behinds allowed the Roys to take a four-point lead into the fourth and they finished it off accordingly. The Roys’ Erin Gogerly racked up 24 disposals and a goal, further cementing herself as her side’s most instrumental player thus far for season 2018, while Lucy Kerr was also significant with 15 touches. Caulfield’s Millie Klingbeil attained 23 disposals and a goal, in another regular standout effort, Leah Oswald had one of her best games for the season with 18 touches, and Georgia Cooper, 22, Ally Bild, 19, and Irena Malliaras, 17 were a handful of other influential, major ball winners in their side’s loss.

SKOB v Old Trinity (6.2 38 – 3.3 21)

SKOB surged back into premiership contention after taking down Old Trinity by 17 points in a tough contest at Basil St Reserve. The first term was close and both teams fought hard, however the in the second quarter, SKOB kicked away taking a 26-9 lead at the midway break. SKOB were able to continue their scoreboard pressure for the remainder of the match, Old Trinity only managing to hold them goalless in the final term when it was too late in the game for them to make a comeback. SKOB forward Sarah Cameron led from the front and kicked an impressive bag of four, coming off the back of her successful Big V match haul of three against the Adelaide Footy League. Bree Doyle was instrumental for her side with 21 touches, as was Alexandra Hynes. Old Trinity’s Grace Dillon was a pivotal ball winner in her side’s loss with 19 touches, while Phoebe Maus and Erika Vredenbregt were also influential in their side’s competitive efforts.

Old Xaverians v Melbourne University WFC

Melbourne Uni made it four wins from their past five outings as they defeated Old Xaverians by 30 points at Xavier College. 16 scoring shots to one showcases the Mugars’ dominance throughout the day, with the Xavs hitting the scoreboard for the first time in the fourth term. Despite the harsh wintery conditions, the Mugars dominated possession with 234-156 and subsequently gave their forwards every opportunity to post a winning score with 37 inside 50’s to the Xavs’ 14. Asha Price was the main recipient in front of goal with two majors for the third consecutive match while Ashley Bye and Olivia Turnbull kicked one each. The Mugars have created a name for themselves as pressure queens of William Buck Premier and Sunday was no different as they laid a record 100 tackles with Lauren Munday accumulating 13 of her own as well as leading the way with 21 disposals. One week after captaining the Big V women’s side to a 37-point victory over the Adelaide Footy league, Ruby Grounds backed it up with 18 touches and five tackles, while teammates Candice Adams (17), Lucy Watkins (16) and Leah Caluzzi (15) each surpassed the 15-disposal count. Emily Archer led admirably for the Xavs and had a game-high 26 disposals while Madison Sorrenti and Elizabeth Carty impressed. Carle Rooks kicked the sole major for the Xavs as they now fall to seventh on the ladder with three wins from their opening nine matches. The Mugars climb into second spot as one of three teams (Marcellin and Kew) on 26 premiership points.
