A Centenary celebration for the Big V
2025 will be a season of celebration as the VAFA recognises the 100th anniversary of the first Big V match, which took place against the South Australian Amateur Football League
Brunswick NOBS registered their first win of 2018 as they defeated Ivanhoe by 23 points at Alec Gillon Oval. Brunswick trailed by six points at half time but piled on eight goals to four in the second half, including five to one in the third term. Dominic Sullivan booted four goals for NOBS while Aidan Pollock starred in a BOG display. Lachlan Roberts led the way for the Magpies with four majors as they now sit in 10th and the only team without a win in Division 1.
Preston Bullants handed Ormond their first loss of 2018, running out 39-point winners at Ruthven Reserve. After going goalless in the first term and trailing by 21 points, the Bullants exploded with 18 of the next 26 goals, with 15 of those coming in the second and fourth quarters. Six players kicked multiples for the Bullants but it was Tindarra Hood who stood out above all others with four. Rob Chisholm returned for Ormond in his first senior match this year and kicked four of his own. No changes resulted from the game with the Bullants still fourth and the Monders second.
Therry Penola made light work of Prahran Assumption as they cruised to a 55-point victory at John Pascoe Fawkner Reserve. The Lions kept the Two Blues goalless until the third term and had a total of 23 scoring shots to 13. Jarrod Bannister returned after a week off and kicked five goals for the Lions, while Brett Dickinson was named best for a disappointing Two Blues side who managed just two goals for the game. The Lions remain third on the ladder and the Two Blues drop from fifth to sixth.
West Brunswick held off a spirited fourth-quarter display from Kew and ran out eight-point winners at Victoria Park. The Westies led by 21 points at the last break but gave up three goals to one in the final term of the low-scoring affair (55-63). Bas Simpson was named best afield for the Westies for the second week in a row, while Josh O’Bryan impressed for the Bears. The two sides played for the Pride Cup as the game raised funds for Stand-Up Events, a not for profit organisation challenging sexual and gender discrimination in Australian sport.
Hampton Rovers maintained their winning form with a comfortable 32-point victory over Oakleigh at Scammell Reserve. The Rovers kicked 10 goals to four in the opening half and, despite giving up nine to seven in the third and fourth, never looked like losing the game. 10 players shared the spoils in front of goal for the Rovers, while Aaron Cloke was a standout with six for the Krushers. The Rovers remain in top spot while the Krushers are seventh with two wins.
