Xavs make it two on the trot, accurate Saints impress

Caulfield Grammarians v Old Xaverians (0.9 9 – 5.6 36)

In what was an incredibly hard-fought contest, Old Xav’s were 29-point victors against Caulfield Grammarians at a drenched Glenhuntly Oval. The match was put on pause midway through the third quarter when hail wreaked havoc, making conditions unplayable. Furthermore, the ball stayed to one end of the ground for the entirety of the match due to heavy winds. In her side’s defeat, Collingwood VFLW draftee Grace Buchan was exceptional, making an appearance for her community club and amassing 25 disposals, a flawless effort. However, Old Xav’s had a number of classy, standout performers stepping up to the plate when the wind was in their advantage, including Vaomua Laloifi with 20 touches and a goal, Em Archer with 17 and Audrey Rhodes, kicking two goals. Old Xav’s continue their winning form with two consecutive victories, while the Fields are yet to register a win.

Marcellin v Melbourne University (9.4 58 – 0.1 1)

Marcellin continued their quest to go back-to-back in William Buck Premier with a 57-point thumping of Melbourne University at Bulleen Park West Oval. In tough conditions, Marcellin left Melbourne Uni goalless for the entirety of the match. Melbourne Uni fielded a completely different side to last week’s star-studded cast, most certainly a key factor in their loss. Marcellin had a number of fantastic performances, Laura Robertson again starring with a goal and 18 touches and Shaylee Taylor bagging 3 goals. Elise Wiggins and Taylor Padfield were also instrumental. Ruby Grounds was superb for the MUGARS with 24 disposals as was Olivia Flanagan with 18 in their side’s defeat. It looks as though this season may be unpredictable with regards to the MUGARS; however, Marcellin continue to flaunt their dominance, going into Round 3 as flag favourites.

Kew v Fitzroy-ACU (3.8 26 – 1.4 10)

Kew proved themselves in the wet against a tough opponent in Fitzroy-ACU, coming away with a 16-point win at Victoria Park, their first victory as a William Buck Premier Women’s side in the VAFA. With some big ins, the Bears had a vast range of influential performances. Danielle Calautti racked up an incredible 26 touches, as did Michaela Harding with 23, Molly Coulter with 19 and Ash Bruce with 18. Roisin Lambert was also prominent, kicking 2 goals. Erin Gogerly and Gemma Minuz were amongst Fitzroy-ACU’s best, each with 22 and 17 touches respectively. This is not the start to the season the Roy’s would have hoped for, however their draw eases throughout the year after a tough first two opponents. Kew have played together for a number of years in the NFNL and are a team that have proven cohesion and fantastic ball handling. It is no wonder they not only won this battle, but had so many gallant and coordinated efforts from their experiences players.

Old Trinity v SKOB Saints (1.6 12 – 6.1 37)

SKOB claimed their first win for the season in a tough clash against a new and improved Old Trinity. At Old Trinity’s home ground of Hudson Oval Playing Fields, it was straight goal-kicking that got the Saints over the line, with both teams recording an equal number of 7 scoring shots a piece. Gun goal-kicker from last season, Sarah Cameron, was sensational for the Saints with 3, as were Anna Townsend and Charlotte Stoltz. Imogen Barnett, Ness Murphy and Jodie-Lee Pirak-Murphy were the best performers for Old Trinity. Barnett was particularly influential with 22 touches and 40 hit outs. SKOB have rebounded after a tough loss in Round 1, however a grand final rematch awaits when they take on Marcellin in Round 3, a much-anticipated clash, one not to miss! Old Trinity have been impressive thus far and it will be interesting to see the outcome of their next round matchup against the unpredictable MUGARS.
