Nine unanswered goals in the fourth term helped Williamstown CYMS to a comprehensive 96-point win over Old Ivanhoe, securing a finals berth as they claimed fourth spot on the ladder. Trailing by nine points at the first break, the CYs kicked nine goals to three across the second and third quarter before exploding in the last. Mitch Parkinson was elite up forward with four goals for the CYs, while Russell Ackerly was best afield. Hoers skipper Michael Mitris fought valiantly alongside James Binney but they now finish the season in eighth spot on the ladder.
Old Geelong did their utmost to snatch fourth spot from Williamstown as they defeated Old Haileybury by 13 points at Como Park. However, it was to no avail with the Cy’s getting up over the Hoers, leaving the Ogs in fifth spot after the home and away season. Edward Keach starred for the Ogs and was named best afield while Nathan Waite backed up his seven goals last week with another five for the Bloods. The Bloods finish in second spot and will play Caulfield in next week’s second semi-final.
Caulfield Grammarians proved far too strong for Kew in their Round 18 clash, running out 70-point winners at Glenhuntly Oval. The ladder leaders trailed by 11 points at the first break but nailed 16 of the last 20 goals as they officially claimed the minor premiership. Hugo Gates was at his very best for the Fields and Will Barker top-scored with four goals, while Brin Duggan and Sam Glover were standouts for the Bears. Kew will now return to Division 1 and reload after winning three games for the season and finishing 10th.
35 scoring shots to 10 helped Marcellin to a commanding 120-point victory against Old Camberwell and Gordon Barnard Reserve. Trailing by four points at the first break, the Eagles exploded with 21 of the last 22 goals of the game, including 16 in the second half. Nicholas Crosbie was the main destroyer with five goals for the Eagles while Daniel Cullinan and Patrick Howe kicked four each. Ben Hart kicked three for the Wellers who end their year in seventh with eight wins. The Eagles have won seven of their past eight games and enter finals as the form side behind Caulfield.
Old Mentonians completed their season in Premier C with a 28-point win over Hampton Rovers at Keysborough Playing Fields. With finals still a chance at the start of the round, the Panthers were outstanding as they kicked 13 of the first 18 goals to put the game to bed by three quarter time. Jack Davis kicked five goals for the sixth-placed Panthers and Brad Norton was dominant. Sam Bradford kicked four of the Rovers’ 12 majors as they return to Division 1 with six wins for the year.
