28 scoring shots to 14 helped Old Brighton to a comfortable 39-point victory over Fitzroy at Brunswick Street Oval. Leading by 10 points at half time, the Tonners piled on eight goals to four in the second half as Anthony Zimmerman and Oliver Cavallaro took control, ending the match with four goals each. Ben Austen and Dylan Verney continued their strong form for the Tonners, while Roys skipper, Rory Angiolella, starred his side. It was the Roys’ third loss in a row and they now sit seventh behind the ladder-leading Tonners.
Old Carey secured their third win for the year as they defeated Ajax by 36 points at Carey Sports Complex. Leading by just 11 points at the last break, the Panthers piled on five goals to one in a dominant final term and ran way with the win. Marc Lock and Cam Wallace were named best afield for the Panthers, while George Curnow and Sam Cust nailed three goals each. Richie Simon and Nathan Zielinski fought hard for the Jackas, who remain a game clear in fourth.
Mazenod fought hard for their fifth win of 2017, defeating a reinvigorated Peninsula by 13 points at Central Reserve. It was a low-scoring affair with just 18 goals kicked for the day, but the Nodders, who trailed by 21 points at half time, were strong in the second half and kicked seven goals to one. Simon Hall and Dean Izon starred for the fifth-placed Nodders, while Bradley Schuurman was the best for the Pirates who remain on two wins for the season.
Old Scotch proved too strong for Monash Blues as they ran out 59-point winners at Frearson Oval. The Cardinals opened their account with eight goals to two in the first half and refused to allow the Blues back into the contest as they maintained their lead through the remainder of the match. James Sansom and Jack Bull continued their impressive form as they dominated for the Cardinals while Matthew Seed kicked a season’s best four goals. James Taylor was a standout for the Blues who now fall from fifth to sixth on the ladder.
St Bernard’s came from 19 points down at half time and edged past Parkdale Vultures for a 15-point victory at Gerry Green Reserve. Nine goals to three in the second half allowed the Snow Dogs to claim their eighth win of the year, with Shaun Clarke, Chris Hughes and Jack McNamara kicking three majors each. 2016 Moore Medallist, Charlie Dillon, led the charge for the Vultures with four goals and was their standout player.
