Eight goals to one in the final term led the top-of-the-table Old Brighton to a 79-point victory against Fitzroy at Brighton Beach Oval. Leading by 36 at the last break, the Tonners started raining goals with Alex Mastromanno leading the charge via a dominant seven-goal performance and taking his season tally to 13. Ben Austen and Tom Fisher starred for the Tonners, while Mark Obushak and Peter Baccanello fought hard for the Roys. The loss is the Roys’ first for the year and they now sit fifth.
Old Scotch completed its second consecutive come-from-behind victory to remain undefeated three matches into the season, chasing down a 19-point three quarter time deficit and running over Peninsula by 41 at Camberwell Sports Ground. The Pirates were outstanding for three quarters but could manage just two points in the last while the Cardinals sent home nine. Jono Daggian (four) was at his very best again for the Cardinals and Jordan Clarke (four) also chipped in with a bag. Will Crowder nailed four goals for the Pirates in his best outing for the season and Ash Collins was their best. The Cardinals sit third on the ladder, while the Pirates are yet to win a game and at the bottom.
St Bernard’s claimed their biggest scalp of the season with a 16-point victory over Old Carey at Carey Sports Complex. After jumping out to a 30-point half-time lead, the Snow Dogs gave up six goals to four in the final two quarters but hung on to their third straight win via standout performances from Adam Bentick (one) and Connor Riley. Marc Lock starred for the Panthers alongside three goals from Morgan Evans, but they sit in eighth without a win to start the year.
Five goals from Liam Welsford helped Mazenod to their first win since returning to Premier B, defeating Monash Blues by 14 points at Central Reserve. Ben Phibbs and Kieran McKeogh each chipped in with two goals for the Nodders, while Rob Mann (one) gave his second standout display for the year. Nick Petering (one) continued his scintillating form for the Blues and Matthew Davidson snagged three in his first game for the year. The win lifts the Nodders to seventh and just one spot below the Blues.
Ajax made it two from two when they ran over Parkdale Vultures by nine points at Gerry Green Reserve. Trailing by five points at the last break after a see-saw battle, the Jackas came home with three goals while restricting the Vultures to one. Zachary Fleisher starred in a best-on-ground performance for the Jackas and Ashley Kalb (three) was the main recipient in front of goal. Nathan Peterson (three) and Josh Green (three) combined for more than half of the Vultures’ goals and Michael Graham was elite. The win takes the Jackas into fourth spot and the Vultures sit ninth without a victory.
