Premier
Fitzroy-ACU remain the only undefeated side in Premier after defeating SKOB Saints at Victoria Park on Saturday night. With a final score of 33-13, the Roy girls were able to take control of the game in the second quarter where they scored three goals to the Saints’ two behinds. Saints’ Jess Joyce and Samantha Viti were amongst some of the best for the night.
Brunswick Renegades secured their first win of the season with a five-goal victory over Ajax at Gary Smorgon Oval. Three goals in the first quarter set the sene for the Renegades’ triumph, with Kelly Dungate (two) and Brooke Robinson doing the bulk of the damage. Elyse Cherny kicked her first goal this year for the Jackas while Ruby Steinberg was their best.
Grading Group 1
UHS-W took home the points after a convincing 90-7 point win over Brunswick Renegades (2) at Brens Oval. The Saturday morning game saw a four-quarter performance from the Uhs girls who scored consistently throughout the game. The Renegades hit the score sheet in the second term, but were unable to match their opponent’s intensity for the remainder of the game. UHS-W Bridget Healey and Mara McSweeney booted a combined five goals and were also recognised in the best.
A dominant West Brunswick performance left Therry Penola scoreless in their Round 2 clash at Ransford Oval. A nine-goal to none first half put the girls in black and white in good stead for their second victory. With a final score of 106-0, West Brunswick’s Laura Jago bagged four while Grace Macpherson kicked three and was best on ground. Tara McCormick, Bridget Costello and Casey O’Connell-Paladino were standouts for Therry Penola.
Another dominant performance saw Melbourne University defeat Fitzroy-ACU 2 by 110 points at Ramsden St Oval. The Melbourne Uni girls continued their winning streak as they left Fitzroy scoreless.
Grading Group 2
Marcellin Sheagles were victorious over Old Carey with a 42-12 point win at Marcellin College. After a close first quarter Marcellin were able to hold off Old Carey with their five goals to one for the remainder of the game. Chiara Moretta once again proved herself as a forward to watch with two more goals to add to her tally.
Melbourne University (2) made it a double for the Mugars with a 71-point win over Bulleen Templestowe. The crowd at Ted Ajani Reserve were spectators to yet another one-sided contest whereby Bulleen Templestowe were unfortunately unable to hit the scoreboard. Bonnie Funnell was the best for the Bullants while Amelia Luscombe stood out for Melbourne Uni.
Ivanhoe were able to hold off a valiant Yarra Old Grammarians by four points at Doncaster Reserve on Saturday. Although an extremely close contest, the Ivanhoe girls were able to maintain a narrow lead throughout the four quarters. A two-goal to one final Yarra quarter gave Ivanhoe a scare, but they were able to remain composed to win 35-31. Yarra were unable to take the chocolates, but a three-goal haul from Madison Herft was one of many positives to take from the game.
Grading Group 3
Old Xaverians ran away to an 80-point win over SKOB Saints (2) at Basil St Reserve on Saturday. With a lead of 50 going into the main break, Old Xaverians only built on this lead in the second half and proved too good for their opponent. Gabrielle Golds and Sarah Henderson kicked a combine five out of Old Xaverians 11 goals while Elizabeth Papapetrou was best on ground for the Saints.
A close encounter at Harry Trott Oval saw Collegians defeat South Melbourne Districts by 18 points for their first win in purple and gold. The Lions dominated the first half with three goals to the Swans’ none, but a third quarter win from South Melbourne saw the score at a close 25-16 going into the final term. Stand out performances from Christine Nancarrow, Hannah Singleton and Sophie Barbas assisted in Collegians’ 34-16 point win.
Old Brighton continued their winning streak with a massive 102-point win against Swinburne AFC at Brighton Beach Oval. With a 15-goal Old Brighton game, Swinburne was unable to match their opponent’s intensity and was unable to score. Natasha Lade, Emma Lomas, Iona Miller and Katie Grant were multiple goal scorers and contributed to Old Brighton’s big Round 2 win.
Grading Group 4
Old Camberwell were able to overcome Canterbury by 80 points at Gordon Barnard Reserve. A strong Camberwell start saw them score 4.4 in comparison to Canterbury’s two points. The Cobras were unable to add to their first quarter score of two, while Old Camberwell ended the game with a solid score of 82 points. Old Camberwell’s Rhiannon Green and Canterbury’s Jacqueline Edwards were amongst the best on ground.
A fairly low scoring affair saw Old Trinity tally a second win against Old Geelong on Saturday at Geelong College. Old Geelong came out firing and led 10-0 going into the first break, but Old Trinity lifted their intensity and after a strong second quarter gradually increased their lead. With a final score of 33-10, Caroline Edwards had a stand out game for Old Geelong while Old Trinity’s Georgia Fleiter added two goals to her tally as she continues to impress.
Three unanswered goals in the first half helped St Mary’s Salesian (2) to a 41-point win over Hawthorn AFC. Hawthorn showed signs of fight in the second term but the Saints proved too god. St Mary’s Fiona Murphy and Eliza Matheson were multiple goal scorers for the day while Diamantina Kloufetos was best for the Hawks.
Grading Group 5
Four goals from Mietta McDonald led Old Haileybury to a 99-47 point win over Mazenod OC at Princes Park Oval. A 10-goal to three first half secured Old Haileybury their first win of the VAFA Women’s season. Alongside McDonald’s four, Pulomaja Gardiyawasam added three goals to Old Haileybury’s 14 while Mazenod’s Georgia Anderson scored two.
A five-goal haul from Molly McFarlane led Monash Blues to a comprehensive 96-point win over Oakleigh at Frearson Oval. McFarlane, who kicked two in the season opener, is proving to be a handful for defenders early in the season. Hannah O’Brien starred in a best-on-ground performance, while Anna O’Donnell and Grace Mills kicked three each. The Krushers were led admirably by Shannon Bethune and Audrey Bosito.
Grading Group 6
St Mary’s Salesian (1) recorded their first win for the season in front of a huge crowd at Sportscover Arena on Friday night . They started off the round with a bang and a big result of 67-0 against Hampton Rovers. St Mary’s showcased their array of attacking talent with four separate multiple scorers. Rebecca Grant, Lisa Davie, Nicole Shue and Madeleine Stanley all contributed to the win scoring two goals each.
A six-goal to none second term secured the win for the unbeaten Ormond AFC’s against St Bedes/Mentone at E.E. Gunn Reserve. After a close start of 18-12, Ormond were able to control the remainder of the game. Cassandra Pittard proved to be Ormond’s best for the day while Paige Knapton shone for the Tigers.
Top-of-the-table Beaumaris further reinforced themselves as a force to be reckoned with after a 55-point win over Old Mentonians at Keysborough Playing Fields. A consistent four-quarter performance saw Beaumaris secure their second win and position within their group. Thea Brown contributed three goals to Beaumaris’ final score of 79 while Kayla Hamill kicked two of Old Mentonians’ four.
