The coaching news around the VAFA continues to make headlines, with the latest Bulleen Templestowe’s appointment of Essendon premiership player, David Calthorpe, as senior coach.
With more than 100 games of AFL playing experience and a number of coaching roles since retirement, including a senior assistant role for new St Kevin’s senior coach Shannon Grant, Calthorpe looms as the perfect fit to help the Bullants return to Division 1 after being relegated at the end of 2015.
The Bullants finished seventh on the Division 2 ladder this year with just five wins for the season.

“The Bulleen Templestowe AFC is delighted to announce that David Calthorpe has been appointed as the Club’s Senior Coach. David played over 100 AFL games and was a member of the Essendon’s 1993 AFL Premiership and 1994 Night Premiership teams. He represented Victoria against South Australia in the 1994 State of Origin match winning the EJ Whitten Medal as the best Victorian player.
David and his family live locally and he is excited at the prospect of becoming a Bullant and helping his local community football club succeed. He has had a number of coaching roles including as a Development Coach with Essendon FC and as Senior Coach at Old Essendon Grammarians, Diamond Creek and East Burwood. He has also been an senior assistant coach for Darren Bewick at the Northern Territory Thunder and for Shannon Grant at the Greenvale Football Club.
The Club is very pleased that we have been able to appoint a coach with the depth of football knowledge and experience that David brings and look forward to working with him to bring success to the Club and to developing the pathway to senior football that Bulleen Templestowe provides within our community.”
