Monash Blues pulled off a stunning upset over St Bedes/Mentone Tigers and earnt a finals appearance with a four-point victory at Brindisi Street Oval. Needing a win to solidify finals, the Blues started perfectly as they nailed seven of the first nine goals. The Tigers drew level by half time and hit the lead in the fourth, before a final flurry saw the Blues regain the lead moments prior to the siren. Joel Bartram was electric, Keegan Mason was outstanding and Liam Darcy had his best outing of three goals for the Blues. Michael Barnes (three) and Luke Velluto (three) combined for six goals for the Tigers, who fall back down to second spot on the ladder.
Beaumaris returned to the top of the Premer B ladder at the conclusion of the home and away season with a 36-point win against Ajax at Gary Smorgon Oval. After an even first term, the Sharks piled on 11 goals to five as they ran out the match in the form we’ve grown accustomed to prior to Round 16. Joel Di Natale was named best afield alongside a four-goal performance from Stephen Milne. David Fayman was a sole contributor for the Jackas as the superstar forward bagged five goals.
An eight-goal second term helped Old Scotch to a comprehensive 73-point win against Hampton Rovers at Camberwell Sports Ground. While Charles Dixon and James Bowden found plenty of the ball for the Cardinals, it was the James Sansom show as he bagged seven goals in his strongest performance of the year. Ed Turner and Sam Bradford each snagged three for the Rovers as they return to Premier C in 2017 after four wins for the season. The Cardinals will suit up against the Blues in round one of the Premier B finals.
Fitzroy did everything they could to regain a spot in the top four before season’s end as they defeated Parkdale Vultures by 28 points at Gerry Green Reserve. Trailing by eight points at half time, the Roys galvanised in their bid to make Premier B finals for the first time as they piled on seven goals to two in the remaining half. 150-game superstar Rory Angiolella carved it up through the midfield and was deservedly named BOG, while Corbin Stevic top-scored with three majors. Tim Boland led from the front for the Vultures, who big farewell to two-time premiership coach Sam Radford. The Roys missed finals by half a game after the Blues knocked off the Tigers.
10 goals in the second quarter capped Old Brighton’s season off nicely as they ran out 49-point winners against Old Haileybury at Brighton Beach Oval. Daniel Anthony caught fire and kicked eight goals as everything he touched turned to gold. Tom Fisher and Michael Karayannis chipped in with four each for the Tonners, while Nathan Waite bagged six for the Bloods. The Tonners finished sixth but blooded a bevy of talented youngsters, while the Bloods will look to regroup as they return to Premier C.
