2024 – A Golden Vintage for Old Scotch (Part 2: The Cardinals)
Old Scotch fans will fondly remember 2024 as they experienced the view from the top of the mountain in both the Premier Men’s and Premier Women’s competitions for the first
De La Salle solidified their position at the top of the William Buck Premier ladder with a commanding 61-point victory against Old Trinity at Waverley Oval. The top-of-the-table clash failed to live up to pre-game expectation as De La booted four goals to one in the first quarter and refused to give the T’s a sniff for the remainder of the match. Edward Clinch has proven a highly successful recruit in his first two games for De La, adding four goals to the three he booted two weeks ago. Damien Rayson starred in the best-on-ground performance, while Adrian Indovino returned to De La’s forward 50 with three goals. Andrew Kyriacopoulos and Fergus Stewart were the best for the T’s, who now fall to fourth on the ladder after a winless past four rounds.
University Blues replaced the T’s in second spot on the ladder following their hard-fought 22-point win against Collegians at Uni Oval. Just two goals were kicked in the first half as the one and two defences in the competition went toe to toe. However, a Tom Silverstro and Patrick Hayes-led Blues outfit broke free in the final two quarters and kicked five goals to two on their way to their seventh win for the year. Tom Penberthy continued his standout 2016 form as the Lions’ best, and Julian Eimutis ran hard all day but ultimately couldn’t stop their side from falling to eighth place on the ladder.
A five-goal haul from Al Armstrong helped Old Melburnians to a 78-point victory over Old Carey at Sportscover Arena today. 34 scoring shots to 11 told the story of OM’s dominance, with Tom Paule, Tom Cameron, Ed De Feguley and George Hurley-Wellington chipping in with two goals each. Morgan Evans and Will Nichols snagged two each for the Panthers, while Sam Cust was named their best player for the fourth time this year.
A last-minute goal gave St Kevin’s a two-point come-from-behind victory against University Blacks at TH King Oval earlier today. Trailing by five points at the end of the third term, SKOB nailed four goals to three in the last quarter to edge themselves over the line and ultimately keep their finals hopes alive by drawing level at 5-5. Billy Kanakis continued his stellar goal-kicking form with three for SKOB, while Conor Ross was named BOG. The Blacks now fall outside the top four after winning their previous five on the trot, while SKOB move to seventh.
Old Xaverians made it two wins from their past three outings with a 58-point victory against St Bernard’s at Toorak Park. Trailing by three points at quarter time, the Xavs piled on six unanswered goals in the second quarter and gained the momentum which would stay with them for the remaining two quarters. Brendan Goss top scored with three goals for Xavs, while Ben Kennedy and first-gamer Jordan Kelly dominated all over the ground. Sam Woods starred for the Snow Dogs, who are still in search of their second win for the year.
