St Bedes/Mentone Tigers replaced Old Scotch in second place on the Premier B ladder after they defeated Cardinals by 70 points at Camberwell Sports Ground. Leading by 28 points at half time, the Tigers pumped 10 goals to four in the second half and ran away with the win in what was predicted a blockbuster between the second and third best sides in Premier B. Michael Barnes is operating at another level at the moment, recording four goals in a best-on-ground performance and taking his season tally to 23. Luke Velluto also bagged four goals and Jaryd Robertson continued the stunning form he showcased in last week’s Big V game. Gene van den Broek stood tall for the Cardinals and Jack Furey kicked three.
Hampton Rovers registered their second win for the season with a seven-point victory against Old Brighton at Brighton Beach Oval today. The Rovers did not have things all their own way, with the Tonners fighting back from 34 points down at the main break. Young gun and Rising Star nominee, Christian Carnovale, displayed skill and poise in a best-on-ground display for the Rovers, while Daniel Anthony booted three goals for the Tonners.
Monash Blues caused the upset of the round when they kept the previously undefeated Beaumaris to just three goals in their seven-point win at Frearson Oval. The kicked two unanswered in the first term and maintained a slight lead for the remainder of the low-scoring affair. Andre Headberry kicked two the Blues’ five majors, while Lachlan Boyd mirrored Headberry’s effort with two for the Sharks. Beaumaris are now just two points clear of the Tigers on the ladder.
Ajax put an end to Fitzroy’s unbeaten run since Round 5 this year, running out 35-point winners at Gary Smorgon Oval. Dean Rotenberg starred and kicked four goals for the Jackas, and Brad Caplan ran riot in a best-on-ground performance. Chris Doherty was the only multiple scorer for the Roys with two, and the loss causes them to fall from fourth to seventh.
A five-goal to two final quarter has helped Parkdale Vultures to a 25-point victory against Old Haileybury at Gerry Green Reserve. Scores were level early in the fourth but the Vultures had the composure to settle and get it done on home soil, with Tom Redmond kicking four goals and Tim Boland leading from the front all day. Nathan Waite snagged five for the Bloods, who have now lost six in a row.
