Parkside’s slow start to the season continued as they went down to Aquinas by 96 points at Aquinas College. A 10-goal to two first half set up the win for Aquinas and they piled on 13 to six in the second half, refusing to let up. Sam Williams and David Malvaso were monsters in front of goals, combining for 11 for the victors. Darren Gresham did his utmost for the Red Devils as their best player.
Glen Eira made it two from two in Division 3 as they defeated UHS-VU by 41 points at Brens Oval. Leading by 14 points at three quarter time, the Saints sent through five goals to one in the fourth term and ultimately blew the game away. Lachlan Pound snagged four and Andrew Spink was everywhere for the Saints, while Tom Bates and Nick Devereux stood up for UHS.
Canterbury Cobras are taking to Division 3 with an ease encompassed by very few as they sit atop the ladder after their 36-point win against Power House. Nicholas Szabo, Scott Fitzgerald and Rohan Walmsley caused a number of headaches up forward for Power House, combining for 13 of the Cobras’ 15 goals. Luke Stubbs was dominant for Power House with six majors.
La Trobe University earnt their first four points for the year after they defeated Elsternwick by 107 points at La Trobe Uni. 10 goals to one in the first half said it all and 11 to three in the second capped off an impressive win for La Trobe. Mitchell Gleeson did the damage for La Trobe with five goals, while Scott Grace did it all for the Wickers as he kicked each of their four.
Hawthorn continued their red-hot form with a tough five-point victory against Division 3 rivals Albert Park in the battle of the birds. Big man Jason Ince took his 2016 tally to nine goals from two matches with a bag of four and helped keep his side in third position on the ladder. Lachlan Chapman starred in a best-on-ground display for the Hawks, while Michael Brannelly tried his heart out as the Falcons remain without a win.
South Melbourne Districts are a team in form on the back of their three-goal victory against Swinburne University at St James Park. Trailing by 23 points at the end of the first, the Swans took flight as they snagged 15 of the next 23 goals for the match. Inaccurate kicking cost the Razorbacks, who had two more shots on goal than their unbeaten opponents. Steve Clarke was named best afield due to his two goals and dominant display.
