The VAFA is thrilled to announce that six leaders from across our competition have been selected to participate in AFL Victoria’s ‘Lead Your Way’ Program in 2025. Selection for Lead
Old Ivanhoe Grammarians captain, Michael Mitris, capped off a standout four quarter performance by kicking the winning goal after the siren and sealing an incredible one-point win against Kew at Chelsworth Park. Trailing by 11 points with three minutes left on the clock, the Hoes kicked successive majors in the dying minutes, with the skipper’s coming on the back of a Nick Reiwoldt-inspired contested mark 20m out. The match between the two Premier C heavyweights stood up to all expectations, with both sides dominating play at different times throughout the day. The Bears were outstanding in their last quarter comeback, turning a 21-point deficit into an 11-point lead via dominant displays by Kyle Margaritis and Zac Jones. Jack Delbridge often found himself at the coalface and Maibaum snagged three majors for the Bears, while Paul Colbert kicked three of his own for the Hoes.
Peninsula solidified their finals credentials two rounds into the season by defeating Marcellin by 66 points at Marcellin College. The Pirates took no time to stamp their authority on the game, kicking five goals to one in the first and refusing to look back to the remaining three quarters. Stefan Barbour continued his red-hot goal kicking form to commence the season, adding five majors to the nine he recorded last week, while skipper Stu Grigg had the ball on a string in a best-on-ground performance. Jeremiah Antypas stood tall for the Eagles as he kicked four goals. The Pirates sit comfortably at the top of the Premier C ladder with a percentage of 211.02 after two rounds, while the Eagles find themselves in unfamiliar territory one spot from the bottom.
Williamstown CYMS remain undefeated to start the season after they came from behind to run over Oakleigh by 22 points at Scammell Reserve earlier today. Trailing by five points at the main break, the Daniel Calman-Orr led CYs pumped nine goals to five in the second half to put the result beyond doubt. The CYs shared their 12 majors between nine players, while Aaron Cloke and Stuart Wines kicked six between them for the winless Krushers. Dermot Cleary stood tall for the Krushers in the face of their second consecutive loss, while Nic Holdsworth and Zac Read joined Calman-Orr in the CYs best.
Mazenod continued their sensational start to the 2016 year in Premier C, defeating Old Camberwell by 43 points at Gordon Barnard Reserve. In an up and down opening half, the Nodders led by four goals at the first break before a four-goal to nil second quarter put the Wellers ahead by six points with two quarters to play. The ‘premiership’ quarter proved the difference as the Nodders piled on seven goals to two and held the lead for the remainder of the match. Kieren Mckeogh starred with four majors for the winning side, while Thomas Kanz snagged three for the Wellers.
Caulfield Grammarians registered their first victory for the year after they defeated Ormond by 50 points at E.E. Gunn Reserve. With just 13 points in it with one quarter to play, the Fields kicked six unanswered goals to run out the match. Charlie Logan starred with four majors for the Fields, while Tom Smith was best on. James Landman and Jeremy Simon kicked two each for the Monders, who sit on the bottom of the ladder.
