Collegians did their utmost to elevate themselves above relegation territory in William Buck Premier, dismantling Beaumaris to the tune of 96 points at Harry Trott Oval. Despite battling inaccuracy in front of goal, the Lions’ 16.20 (116) was more than enough as they held their opponents to just 2.8 (20). Nick Bobeff did the damage in front of goal, kicking three in all-star performance for the Lions. Despite winning, the Lions still sit ninth on the ladder, with Beaumaris the only team below them.
University Blues have maintained their rich vein of form heading into the business end of the season with a 61-point victory against Old Carey at Carey Sports Complex. A 10-goal to four first half set the tone for the Blues, who ended the game with 10 separate goal kickers amongst their 16 majors. Ross Young continued to wreak havoc in a best-on-ground performance, while Lachlan Macleod stood tall for the Panthers. The win gives the Blues a two-game buffer over the fourth-placed Panthers, who now sit just two points ahead of De La Salle.
St Bernard’s regained top spot on the William Buck Premier ladder on the back of their 23-point win against Old Scotch at Camberwell Sports Ground. After jumping out to a three-goal first quarter lead, Bernard’s maintained an arm’s length over the Cardinals for the remainder of the match. Alexander Singleton led from the front for Bernard’s in a best-on-ground display, while Andrew Merrington snagged three goals. The Cardinals sit eighth on the ladder and will now battle it with the Lions in their bid to avoid relegation.
De La Salle continues to defy the odds as they defeated Old Trinity by 19 points at Trinity Grammar this afternoon. Shooting out to a four-goal lead in the first quarter, De La used the corridor meticulously to slice their way into their forward 50 and continually hit the scoreboard. The T’s rallied in the third to regain the lead, but De La proved too strong thanks in large to Hugh Nicholson and Adrian Indovino. Jake Walsh stood out for the T’s, with a bag of five goals to his name, including three in the second quarter. De La now moves to fifth on the ladder and just half a game outside the top four, while the T’s still sit comfortably in second.
University Blacks put an end to four straight losses with a 59-point win over Old Xaverians at Melbourne University. A five-goal to one first term got the scoreboard ticking over for the Blacks, who then continued to apply pressure and send through 13 goals to seven in the remaining three quarters. Jordan Foster starred for the Blacks with six goals, while Matt Handley was the only multiple goal kicker for the embattled Xavs. The loss sees the boys in red and black slide to seventh on the ladder, while the Blacks move up to sixth.
