The two Uni teams locked horns at Melbourne University Oval and Blacks got the early jump on their rivals leading 29-4 at Quarter time. They stepped up their assault to go into half time at 30-13. After the main break, the Blues rallied and kicked 4 goals to 0 to record a 7-point victory and keep their slim finals hopes alive. Blakey kicked 2 for Blues while Cordell was their best player. The win puts them in 6th place, 2 points behind De La Salle. It will be an arduous task to get to the finals but it looks like the top four may be set.
St.Kevins reentered the winners’ list this week with a 6 goal win over the ailing Old Scotch at T.H.King. The home side was never troubled by Scotch who have struggled with consistency all year and may find themselves in a relegation battle at season’s end. Kerr and Ring kicked 4 each for SKOB with the latter being named best on ground. The win sees them move to third, four points behind the second placed Old Xavs. Anderson kicked 3 and Hays was the best for Scotch in a tough game for the side.
De La had a whopping 150pt win against the hapless Old Trinity at the Dairy Bell. An 8 goal to 0 first term set up the rot and they powered on from there, with another 7 in the second term. Old Trinity had little firepower to combat with De La, only managing the 6 goals for the day. Tyquin kicked 7 for De La while Vawser once again found himself best on ground and a serious chance for the league’s best and fairest this year.
Old Melburnians have been quite competitive over the last 6 weeks but nothing could prepare them for the might of St. Bernards. OMs could manage but a solitary point for the afternoon as Bernards kicked a whopping 30, including an eight-goal term to start proceedings and 10 in the third quarter. Sibbald was outstanding kicking 6 and Delzoppo was at his usual lethal best in the rout. It was always going to be a tough day at the park for OMs but the fact that they could not register a goal in the game shows how potent this St Bernards’ side truly is. They remain the team to beat after their 2014 premiership success and it will take a mighty force to stop them.
Two heavyweights battled it out at the Shark Tank down in Beaumaris in what many hoped would prove to be a game that compared with their first clash of the year where the Old Xaverians came out 8 point winners. In a crucial game for Beaumaris, they played as if they had nothing to lose and threw the kitchen sink at the Xavs leading 27-13 at the first break. Then the Xavs fired up and kicked 5 goals to 1 and wrestled back the momentum in a free flowing tight contest. Beauy took the lead back at three quarter time before the Xavs once again rallied in a true showing of grit and determination and took it in a nail biter by 11 points to just about lock in a top 2 finish, barring a disaster on the way home. Silk starred with Morris and Hausegger putting in strong showings too. Buckle kicked 2 and was close to the Sharks best.
Tips:
University Blacks v St.Kevins
Old Melburnians v Uni Blues
Old Scotch v Old Xaverians
Old Trinity v St Bernards
De La Salle v Beaumaris
