PEGS celebrated its first win of the 2015 season, in a come from behind victory at Peninsula. It had been a long time coming as the Bombers lifted its output in recent months to claim its opening points for the season. Elsewhere, Old Haileyburians made a statement crushing fellow top-four rival Old Ivanhoe at home; Williamstown CYMS took the points in the Division 1 Grand Final rematch versus Therry Penola; Marcellin did it easy against Oakleigh; and Monash Blues regained top spot through percentage in a major victory over Old Camberwell.
PEGS got off to a slow start in the meeting with Peninsula OB, facing a 10 point deficit at the first change. But the Bombers picked up the pieces after quarter time to take the lead. Five goals in the second term gave PEGS the lead at the half and the efforts carried through to the final siren. The Bombers pegged on another eight goals in the second half, despite Peninsula closing the gap to under two kicks. PEGS pushed out the lead once again in the last with help from Trent Skurrie’s six goals to run away 33-point victors.
Old Haileyburians set the tone in the finals race convincingly trumping Old Ivanhoe. Following a lacklustre first term the Bloods made a decisive move in the second with the wind, kicking seven goals to one to break the deadlock. Old Ivanhoe couldn’t produce the same in its turn with the breeze and faced an uphill battle going into the final change 30 points behind. Haileybury turned it on again in the last with another seven to win by 66 points. Ex-Saint, Brett Voss proved a huge inclusion with three goals, while Ed Limon (3) and John Nicolopoulos (4) also starred in the victory.
Williamstown CYMS eased past former Grand Final rivals Therry Penola for a rare win in Premier C. Both have struggled in the new section but the CY’s proved again it has Therry’s number. Williamstown trailed by a goal after the first term, but put Therry to the sword for the remaining three quarters. The CY’s bagged five goals to one in the second quarter, then kept the Lions goalless in the third. And topped it all off with another seven majors in the last to put Therry Penola away by 67 points. Nicholas Ebinger, as he has done most this season, led Williamstown’s goal tally, adding another six to his total.
Oakleigh have proven this season on its day the Krushers can beat anyone, but coming off the break against the top of the table Marcellin, away from home proved too much to handle. The Eagles grabbed the early lead with three goals to nil in the opening quarter. Oakleigh bounced back with four majors in the second, only to be trounced by another seven for Marcellin. The Eagles extended its lead late into the third quarter to blow out beyond 50 points but a late rally by the Krushers held the final margin at 52. Jeremiah Antypas backed up his eight goals last outing with another bag, while Anthony Beaini was named best on ground.
Monash Blues got the percentage boost it needed to jump Marcellin for top spot. The Blues hosted Old Camberwell – the Wellers have only managed the two wins for the season. Monash didn’t waste anytime in gaining the lead with four, first quarter goals. Five more in the second quarter made the margin 34 at half time. Old Camberwell tied the third quarter as both sides struggled to score with just 1.1 a piece. Unfortunately for Old Camberwell the dam wall broke in the last quarter as Monash kicked 11 goals past the Wellers as the final margin rapidly jumped to 97. 13 players hit the scoreboard for Monash – five of them kicking multiple goals in the win that claimed top of the ladder honours.
This week, Old Ivanhoe host Oakleigh, must win for the Hoes if it wants to hold onto third spot and tipping Old Ivanhoe to do so. Marcellin travel to Therry Penola and should secure a strong victory here. Top plays bottom as Monash Blues versus PEGS at PEGS Sporting Fields. The Blues to claim another percentage boosting win. Old Haileyburians face Williamstown CYMS; expect the Bloods to claim the points. Old Camberwell takes on Peninsula OB. The Pirates will get back on track with a victory.
