The VAFA has named a strong 51 man squad for the first representative game of the year, the AFL Victoria Metro Championship match against Northern Football League on 28 March.
New VAFA Co-Coaches Cameron Roberts and Matthew Kempton have delivered on their promise to introduce plenty of new faces to the representative program, with every club from Premier and Premier B having at least one player named in the squad.
There is a fantastic blend of representative veterans and new talent named. This squad includes 16 players that played in the win against the EFL in last year’s Metro Champs and 18 that played in the VAFA’s huge win over Queensland AFL.
St Bernard’s and University Blacks are the two clubs with the most representatives, both clubs have five each whilst Collegians, Old Carey, Old Xaverians and Old Scotch all have four players named each.
Old Melburnians are the standout club from Premier B, with three players named in the side, whilst St Kevin’s and Mazenod each had two players named.
The VAFA squad will assemble for the first time on Wednesday, 11 March and will train the following Wednesday, before reverting to Tuesday and Thursday in the week of the game.
The VAFA are ranked number one in the Championships and will face the Northern Football League for the first time in representative history at senior level. The VAFA has played the old Diamond Valley Football League twice at under age level. The first match was played in 1989 with the VAFA victorious by 33 points, but the DVFL evened the ledger at 1-1 defeating the VAFA U19 Number 2 side by 28 points in 2002.
