AFL Victoria Country’s U19s were too strong for the VAFA’s U19 side as they reclaimed the Brian Molony Cup winning by 106 points at St Albans Reserve in Geelong.
The contest appeared to be an arm wrestle early as the VAFA’s pressure in the first term was causing the Country to turn over the ball regularly. Despite kicking into the breeze, the VAFA led the Country at quarter time by four points.
However, that was where the fun stopped for the VAFA as the Country asserted their authority on the contest. The VAFA were held scoreless in both the second and third quarters whilst the Country kicked 11.12 in the same period.
The VAFA side struggled to adjust to the extraordinary length of the St Albans ground. Whenever the VAFA looked to rebound off half back, players struggled kicking the extra distance to kick to a team mate on the wing. This was highlighted further that whenever the VAFA won possession on the wing, players realised they were still at least three kicks from home.
It didn’t get much better in the last. Restricted to just one behind, the VAFA couldn’t stop the margin blowing out to over 100 points as the Country team were relentless.
Anthony Scott (Old Trinity) was deemed the best VAFA player on the ground whilst Mitchell Malt (Whitefriars) was awarded the Spirit of the Big V for his efforts over the four quarters.
