The VAFA representative squad went through their final paces at Collingwood’s Westpac Centre last night with the final squad of 25 being confirmed and the announcement that the team will be skippered by Adam Bentick of St Bernard’s with Trent Zimbachs appointed vice-captain for he match against the EFL this Saturday.
The match is the third match of the AFL Victoria Metro Championships triple header being played at Carlton’s Vist Park.
The squad trained under lights on the Olympic Park Oval as the lights from the MCG shone brightly next door. In what was a slick training session the team were told by coach Simon Lethlean before training commenced that Bentick and Zimbachs would be the official leaders on the day.
When Lethlean spoke to VAFA TV after training he was quick to point out that there were many club captains in the side and that if you are playing at this level then you are already a natural leader at your club. Watch both Lethlean and Bentick chat to VAFA TV below.
The final squad was reduced in number by injuries coming out of club practice matches on the weekend with, Chris Johnson (Old Ivanhoe), Josh Madden (St Bernard’s), Ben Dowd (St Kevin’s) all having to withdraw their services due to injury. These players add to some of the other names synonymous with rep footy and as Lethlean pointed out to the group, 14 of the 22 players that played in the VAFA’s win over AFL Victoria Country last year were either injured, unavailable or had left the VAFA.
However most of the squad has played representative football of some kind and whilst there will be a few debutants on Saturday the VAFA coaching panel are excited by what this team offers.
Congratulations to all players selected and good luck to the squad, you can see the full list below.
The match starts at 3.35pm at Vist Park, entry is $10 for adults and the match will also be streamed live at aflvic.com.au and will be broadcast on 96.5FM and Aussie Digital.
