Division 2 club St Johns Old Collegians are ready to take the next step in 2014. The club believes building blocks were laid in 2013 for a bigger tilt this year and it all started int he offseason with the stabilising of the coaching department.
Steve Ware was re-appointed as senior coach for season 2014. Assisting him as joint senior on field coach is Anthony Brannan. Anthony has played his senior football at Keysborough and joins his father in playing football in the VAFA. His dad played in the 1970s for Hampton Rovers.
Mick Hancock–current senior assistant coach and head coach of the Mazenod Cricket Club will continue in his role. The club also welcomes back Adam Jones –past premiership player and captain who has returned to the fold and will be an assistant coach on match days. The preseason returns has also seen premiership player Chris Horbury welcomed back to the clubs as Chairman of Selectors and Senior Football Manager.
The JOCS were pleased with Ware’s year in 2013 – stabilising the club after a tough 2012 in Division 1 – and they are looking forward to launching an assault on the Division 2 Flag in 2014.
The club is delighted with the playing group it has built and the new players that will only add to the depth and talent already at the club.
Having lost a reserves first semi final by just three points in 2013, and the seniors missed finals by just a game the club believes that 2014 has bright prospects with both teams setting a target of playing finals.
The JOCS commenced pre-season training in late November and have regularly had more than 40 at each training session.
With a healthy list the club can’t wait for their practice matches to commence. The preseason starts with a match against Division 3 side St Francis Xavier, that is followed by two more challenging matches against Division 1 sides, Old Mentonians and Old Geelong.
The JOCS, just like so many VAFA, simply cannot wait for April 5 and round 1 of the 2014 season.
