Premier Section again produced a series of surprise results and some bitter pills to swallow for the teams on the losing side of the ledger.
It was a cracking contest at Brindisi St with Old Xaverians trumping St Bedes Mentone Tigers by 17 points. Brendan Goss kicked five goals in a thrilling preview ahead of the finals.
University Blacks didn’t make the most of the Tigers slipping up as they lost to St Bernards at Sportscover Arena. Blacks might regret the decision to move their home match from Uni Oval as they went down to the Bernies by 7 points in a low scoring battle.
It wasn’t a happy day if you play football for Melbourne Uni as University Blues were comprehensively beaten by Beaumaris at Banksia Reserve. The Sharks with Buckley kicking 7 goals, ran rampant in the second half to record a 61 point win that lifts them out of the relegation zone. Blues now sit in 9th and will likely need to win their final two games to be any chance of escaping the drop.
De La Salle blew out the cobwebs of their season with a thumping 94 point win over Collegians. The result never appeared in doubt as De La defied their recent results to collect their second win over the reigning premiers this season. Fourteen De La Salle players kicked a goal in a brilliant team performance.
Old Scotch had a 101 point win at Old Carey to bump their percentage and almost guarantee themselves of fourth spot. Barring a monumental disaster the Cardinals will play finals in a couple of weeks time. Passador’s seven goals the standout performance in the win.
In Premier B the final four is set at last after both AJAX lost and St Kevins won.
SKOBs had shown signs of nerves last week as they succumbed to AJAX but they were good enough to defeat Old Melburnians at TH King by a goal and book a finals berth.
AJAX’s late bid for finals came to an end as they went down to the fast improving Fitzroy by 3 points.
Old Haileyburians were incredibly inaccurate in their match against Caulfield but their 9.26 was enough to defeat Caulfield’s 8.8.
Parkdale Vultures gave Old Trinity the fright of their lives before they run out of puff to go down to the T’s by 22 points. The Vultures remain in the bottom two and will need a significant win next week and for Caulfield to lose by a decent margin if they are to extend their time in this section.
Old Brighton bounced back to form with a stunning 128 point win over Werribee Districts.
In Premier C Peninsula were able to give Shaun Payze 300 reasons to celebrate in his 300th game for the club as they defeated Banyule by 34 points in the early kick off. Gleeson kicked five goals for the Pirates as they sent Banyule back into the relegation places.
Old Camberwell were the beneficiaries of Banyule going down as they made the most of their opportunities to build their percentage and more importantly collect the four points at NOBs-St Pats by 75 points. Hillier kicked five goals for the Wells and teammate Allright had four. The Wellers now have a 5% point break on Banyule with a game to play.
Oakleigh’s late season resurgence continued as they held off PEGS to win by 12 points.
Mazenod continued on their merry way and made light work of third placed Monash Blues, winning by a comfortable 43 points at home.
Marcellin jumped from 4th to 2nd with a gallant 3 goal win at Old Ivanhoe. The result means that the three teams from 2nd-4th are separated by percentage only with a round to play.
