In Division 1 Williamstown CYMS had a percentage-boosting win against Glen Eira who are yet to break their duck in 2013. Ben Gray was the star kicking 10 goals for the CY’s whilst the Saints were well served by the six goals of K Cevik. Ormond crushed MHSOBs by 96 points at the High School in a result that leaves the Unicorns a game from safety in the bottom two. Matt Martinov kicked five goals to celebrate his 200th appearance for the Monders’ in style. Throw the formbook out for both Old Mentonians and Bulleen Templestowe because I doubt anyone saw the Bullants losing at home to the Panthers by 94 points. Oliver Weber kicked five goals for the Panthers. Prahran Assumption continued the up and down season for Old Geelong as they defeated OG’s by 52 points at Toorak Park. Hampton Rovers stamped their authority on Division 1 with a thumping 85 point win at Whitefriars in their top of the table clash. The Rovers had eleven individual goal kickers.
Old Eltham Collegians are second in Division 2 after they held on to beat Emmaus St Leos by just five points. The Animals led the Turtles at every change but they couldn’t secure their first win of 2013. Yarra Valley moved into third with a 28 point win over Monash Gryphons. Old Paradians had a season defining win over the visiting Ivanhoe. Captain-Coach David Boundy inspired his team to the seven point triumph, booting six goals in the process. St John’s continue to build their year nicely and sit in fifth with a win loss ratio of 4-3 thanks to their 53 point win over South Melbourne Districts. Therry Penola remain on top of Division 2 after the Lions defeated St Mary’s Salesian by 25 points. Corey Bannister kicked five goals for the Lions whilst the Saints were served well by Jack Flynn who kicked six goals.
There were upsets in the Premier sections and the biggest upset in the Divisions was in Division 3 where the one point win of St Francis Xavier over UHS-VU. The X-men led all day in a season defining win. Aquinas turned their season around and halted their slide down the Division 3 ladder with a morale boosting nine point win over Elsternwick. Andrew Brazzale’s eight goal haul helped Kew maintain the rage against South Mornington by 10 goals. La Trobe University found the right formula to defeat Albert Park by four goals. Power House have had back to back wins for the first time in more than two seasons after they held on for a thrilling 3 point win over a luckless Old Westbourne by three points. The 52-49 scoreline was low scoring but with Old Westbourne leading for most of the day it was the ability of Power House to run out the game kicking 3.4 to 1.1 in the last quarter that sealed the win. Richmond Central are building their season brilliantly. Woody Bucci kicked five goals for the Snakes their 40 point win over Swinburne University.
In Division 4 the match of the day was at Point Cook where Hawthorn were in town and proved that Hawks are stronger than Bulldogs – at least at this stage of the year. David Tremewen bagged five goals for the Hawks in the six goal win. Hawthorn are joined in equal top spot by Eley Park Sharks who thrashed the Dragons by 87 points. Noel Bahnsen kicked seven goals in for the Sharks who had 10 individual goal kickers in the win. Manningham Cobras had an important win against Mt Lilydale with the Cobras saluting by 13 points. Scott McPherson bagged eight goals for the Cobras whilst Matt Fernando managed five goals for the Old Boys. West Brunswick firmed up their position in the six with a big 66 point win over the winless Chadstone. Richard Benjamin booted seven goals for Magpies in the win. In an incredibly high scoring match, Northern Blues prevailed over Box Hill North by 15 points. Dan Penny’s nine goals and Lachlan McRedmond’s six goals highlighted the 158-143 scoreline.
