Last Saturday a film crew working on behalf of Chinese TV station Central China TV (CCTV9) spent a day recording a story about the Dragons Football Club.
The story will feature as part of the CCTV9 six part documentary series called The Story of Australia. The series is a celebration of the 40th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between the People’s Republic of China and Australia and will be screened in October this year.
The Dragons were considered the ideal team to focus on for a story on Australia’s game of Australian Rules Football due to their strong connections to players of Chinese ancestry.
Dragons President Jamie Pi was contacted by Darren Flanigan of AFL Victoria about the prospect of having the Division 4 club filmed for for the series. Flanigan spent a couple of years in a development role for AFL China and knew of the Dragons through Jamie.
Australian production company Bearcage have been tasked with filming the series for CCTV9 and the range of stories they are covering is enormous. From mining, to Aboriginal culture, to cuisine and sport, with the coverage of Australian rules football to focus on the VAFA’s newest club.
The filming took place in Round 6 when the Dragons visited Chadstone’s Jordan Reserve and you can view the video below to see how the day unfolded and exactly how many people will be watching a small slice of VAFA action later this year.
CCTV9 is also available via satellite so whilst there will be millions watching in China, many local Australian based Chinese might also catch a glimpse of the Dragons when watching The Story of Australia.
