Shockwaves went through Premier Section today as both grand finalists from Premier B defeated last season’s Premier Grand Finalists. Beaumaris showed they are not pretenders with a brilliant 2 point win, spoiling Collegians flag unfurling party at Harry Trott. At University Oval it was Uni Blacks who again came from behind at half time to defeat Old Xaverians by seven points. There was another close one at Brindisi St where St Bedes / Mentone Tigers held out Old Carey by 5 points. Old Scotch cut the margin back to two points at the final change but a hungrier St Bernard;s kicked away in the last to record their first win of the year by 20 points. At Waverly Park De La Salle joins Beaumaris as the only other undefeated side having beaten Uni Blues by a comfortable margin of 50 points.
Old Trinity continued to set the pace in Premier B with another big win, this time over the winless Fitzroy by 64 points, the evergreen Ramsden with five majors. AJAX joined OT on two wins after they accounted for Werribee Districts by 50 points. Old Melburnians got their season going with a rout of Caulfield Grammarians by 65 points, Seccull and Bennet both with Michelle’s. Old Haileybury defeated Parkdale Vultures by 51 points to also be on two wins. The Vultures join Werribee and Fitzroy without a win in 2013. The big margins continued as Old Brighton handed St Kevins a 73 point loss.
Mazenod earned their first four points of the yea with a 22 point defeat of Banyule in Premier C. Marcellin handed Oakleigh a 20 goal loss, whilst Monash Blues continued their impressive start by defeating promoted NOBs/St Pats by 57 points. Peninsula came from behind against Old Camberwell to win by nine points in a great contest. PEGS won a nail biter against Old Ivanhoe, saluting by three points.
In Division 1 Ormond cruised past Glen Eira to record a 63 point win with Robert Chisholm slotting seven goals and was ably assisted by the six from Matthew Robbins. In another ripping contest Hampton Rovers prevailed over Prahran Assumption by just two points in a magnificent come from behind win. Whitefriars opened their account in 2013 with a dominant 95 point win over MHSOB. In another close one, Bulleen Templestowe made it two from two, defeating Williamstown CYMS by a goal. It was the second loss by a kick for the CYs in the first two rounds. Old Geelong suffered a 60 point home loss at the hands of Old Mentonians.
Winning with a goal after the siren is what boyhood dreams are made of and St Mary’s Salesion will celebrate hard tonight after doing so against Ivanhoe. The come from behind win has them 2-0 to start the Division 2 season. Old Eltham Collegians are also 2-0 after they defeated Monash Gryphons by 14 points, Ciavola with half a dozen goals. St John’s collected four points for the first time in 2013 after defeating Emmaus St Leo’s by 61 points. Bags of seven goals to Scott (St John’s) and five to Ellis (Emmaus St Leo’s) the highlights. Therry Penola are on the board too with a 53 point win over South Melbourne Districts. The Bannister’s shared 14 goals of the TP’s total of 16 between them (Corey 10, Jarrod 4). Yarra Valley celebrated the unveiling of their Division 3 Premiership flag with a 69 point win, Savage kicked five for the Bushrangers.
In Division 3, Aquinas are sitting pretty with two wins from their first two after a Sam Williams (6 goals) inspired 11 goal win over Old Westbourne. Elsternwick joined Aquinas on two wins defeating La Trobe Uni by the same margin, Aaron Thornton bagged six goals for the Wicks. Richmond Central are on the board in 2013 after a solid 73 point away win over St Francis Xavier, Woody Bucci with five goals for the Snakes. Albert Park shocked home side South Mornington with a brilliant 10 goal win. Cale Blizzard kicked five for the Falcons. An Ed Pearson (5 goals) inspired UHS-VU defeated Power House by 92 points and Swinburne Uni shocked Kew with a 16 point win, Higgins kicking five for the Razorbacks.
In Division 4, Chadstone improved dramatically on last week’s showing but fell short of a win by five points to Manningham Cobras. West Brunswick (Gibson 5 goals) cruised past Mt Lilydale by 99 points. Pat Notarao slotted seven goals to help North Brunswick defeat Hawthorn by 22 points. Justin Roussoukas kicked six for the Hawks but it wasn’t enough. Dragons (Vuko 5 goals) are celebrating their first senior VAFA win after they beating Northern Blues by 44 points. This was despite the eight goal haul of the Blues’ Lach McRedmond. Point Cook went to a 2-0 start with a fantastic six goal win over Box Hill North. Eley Park Sharks had the bye.
