Big V coaches confirmed for Bendigo clashes
The VAFA are delighted to announce that LUKE MAHONEY & PAUL CARRIGAN will lead the Big V into battle against Bendigo FNL in July. The VAFA will send two teams
They set up the win with successive six goal hauls in the second and third terms. In those quarters, and indeed all day, it was former Collingwood and West Coast midfielder Damian Adkins who led the charge. His attack on the ball and pinpoint foot-skills were second to none. Others to stand out were fellow wingman James Fry, tough nut Andrew Scott, captain Chris Blumfield and centre half forward Jono Dixon. Fergus Watts copped a battering all day but still finished with five while slippery goal-sneak Shura Taft bobbed up with three, all when the game was in the balance. Down back, Andrew Baxter was solid while Nick Roach and Andrew Stone blanketed the very dangerous duo of Jon Mercuri and Justin Arnold. James Jorgenson shouldered all of the ruck duties and didn’t miss a trick.
There were no miracles today for Xavs. They were flat as a tack and totally outplayed. Tim Clarke and Sam Johnston were great for four quarters but they didn’t have many mates. It will be just the third time in thirteen years that they won’t be running around on grand final day.
West Brunswick controlled the D4 Grand Final all day and ran out comfortable 45 point winners. West Brunswick cruised to a 36 point lead at half time and were never threatened. They were clearly the best team in the competition for the year and deserved their victory. For St FX it was a memorable beginning to the VAFA senior sections and with this experience should become a force in D3 next season.
In the Premier Under 19 division, St Bede’s/Mentone prevailed in a good old fashioned grand final shootout, finishing seven points the better of De la Salle. SBMT were trailling for most of the day but were courageus in overtaking a desparate De La.
Chad Ryan got 5 and Patrick Tyquin 4 for the Tigers with Michael Meehan best afield. For De La Joel Philips and Adam Kovarik got 4 each.
