A picturesque Central Reserve greeted Bulleen Templestowe and Old Geelong in the D1 decider and those attending were treated to a fast paced, highly skilled classic. The Bullants skipped out to what seemed early as a match winning lead at quarter time, kicking 8 goals to 2 in the first quarter. The Bullants were simply breathtaking with their run, delivery and finish. Old Geelong simply couldn’t get into the match and it looked as if this decider might get ugly. Damien Bone and Matty Bain we running riot through the midfield and young Peter Voglis was proving a handful in front of goals.
Old Geelong came out of the quarter time huddle a different looking outfit and they too countered with their run and delivery. The one problem for them however was that the quality of their finish didn’t always match their efforts further afield. Chris Branigan was starting to dominate across half forward for OGS and Matthew Vasey damaging going forward. Old Geelong were back in it a half time, down by 16 points and looking dangerous.
The third ebbed and flowed until the Bullants found another gear and just as they did in the first term, kicked away to a 38 point lead at three quarter time and the engravers were set to work.
Old Geelong however were not finished yet and in an exciting finish to a fantastic day, they stormed home to pile on 8 goals to 3 in the final term, getting within a goal at one stage until the Bullants slotted through a sealer late in the match. Inaccuracy hurt Old Geelong however the Bullants were deserving victors and the way both sides played the game was a joy to watch. Bulleen Templestowe ran out winners by 12 points to claim the E.F. Atkins Cup. Bulleen Templestowe’s Peter Voglis was awarded the John Manton Medal for his best afield performance.
Out at St Bernards on Saturday, the two form sides of D2 in 2008 came together in Werribee and Emmaus St Leos. Again perfect conditions greeted a large crowd and Emmaus showed the early pace slotting through the first two goals of the match. Werribee countered late in the quarter and the scores were level at the first break in a match being played at a frenetic pace. It was much the same for the second term with the Lee brothers outstanding for the Tigers and Emmaus’s smooth movers in Paul Barranello and Anthony Hickey showing their class.
After half time however, the fast running Werribee side took control of the match and were never seriously challenged as they went on to claim the P.A. Matthews Cup by 62 points. Trent Lee from Werribee was awarded the Tony Fellows Medal for the best afield.
At Coburg yesterday, Williamstown CYMS finished off their stellar season with victory over Eltham in the D3 Section Grand Final. After a relatively even first quarter (Williamstown up by 11 at the first break), the towners broke away from the Turtles in the second term to have the game relatively safe at half time. The Turtles, try as they might, could not get back into the match and finished with a disappointing 3 goals, all of which kicked by their Playing Coach Jon Garrard. Williamstown went onto win the match by 60 points. Ben Hynes was superb at Full Back for Willy and was awarded the Vic Zanin Medal for best afield and was well supported by Skipper Cam McNamara.
