The Lions were as impressive as any team this year, belting the much touted St Bede’s/Mentone outfit by 82 points. Fergus Watts, coming off two weeks of R&R, was in menacing touch up forward. So too, were small men Shura Taft and Ben Robbins, before they hobbled off injured. Tall defenders Nick Stone and Charlie Holst also dominated.
In a remarkable game at Toorak Park, Old Trinity threw everything at Old Xavs in a 40-goal-plus shootout. But the champs held on to win by four points. The news for Trinity got a little better when results filtered in from around town. De La were right in the mix against Old Ivanhoe but fell in a hole in the final term, going down by 52 points. And Uni Blacks never had a hope against Old Brighton, also going down by 52 points. Luke Mann and Marcel Bruin did as they liked for the ‘Tonners. In he final game, Scotch wore down Uni Blues at Melbourne University to put an end to Uni’s year and keep their chances of the double chance alive.
In B Section, Old Haileybury stormed home to roll St Kevins by two goals. Old Camberwell did away with Caulfield, St Bernards and Old Essendon were easy winers and Old Carey provided the biggest upset of the day, downing Marcellin by 22 points.
