Firstly, bottom team Uni Blacks, who seemed certainties for relegation a few weeks ago, rolled the mighty Old Xavs by four points at Melbourne University. The game brings the Uni side to two wins, equal with De La and a game behind Old Trinity.
Xavs’ loss would have been music to the ears of top side Old Scotch. Problem is, they got done themselves at the hands of Old Ivanhoe. The Hoers won by four goals and would have won by a whole heap more if not for sloppy kicking. Last year’s Woodrow medalist Hayden Heta was the dominant player on the ground.
The trend looked set to continue when De La, who were missing several key players, led Collegians at half time but the Lions gritted it out to win by 9 points. Given that Xavs and Scotch both lost, the win couldn’t have come at the better time for Collegians. Ditto St Bede’s/Mentone. They relinquished the lead to Uni Blues in the final term, but stormed home with a couple of late goals to Peter McGettigan to get the four points. As a result, they now share top spot with Colllegians.
In B Section Results, Old Essendon were far too strong for Beaumaris at Sportscover Arena, Old Haileybury got over Old Melburnians late at McKinnon, St Bernards bounced back with a thumping 9 goal win over Marcellin, St Kevins were too good for Caulfield by 10 goals and in Old Camberwell continued their good form beating Old Carey by 20 points.
