Tjaegan joined Salesian Old Collegians in 2005 after reading an article in the Leader newspaper about the newly formed Under 19s who were aligned with VFL club – Casey Scorpions. Tjaegan made an immediate impact and quickly began to star at Under 19 level.
He was added to the Casey Scorpions list before the VFL registration cut-off and he was promoted to the seniors after two outstanding efforts in the reserves.
Tjaegan played the remainder of the 2005 season at Salesian and then the 2006 season in the seniors where he was an extremely popular and well liked member of the club.
